IOC Launches Bid Process For 2018 Winter Olympics

July 31, 2009: The International Olympic Committee said it has initiated the bid process for the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The IOC said it would name the city July 6, 2011 during the 123rd IOC Session in Durban.

As the first step in the process, National Olympic Committees have been invited to submit the name of a city within their jurisdiction as an applicant to host the 2018 Games. Early candidates include Annecy, France; PyeongChang, South Korea; Bukovel, Ukraine; Sofia, Bulgaria; Munich and Geneva, each of whom already have indicated an interest in hosting the 2018 WInter Games. Tromso, Norway, had been moving toward that goal but officials there withdrew late last year due to economic situations. The U.S. Olympic Committee said it would not bid on any Winter Games until the process for 2022 comes up, at the very least.

Upcoming Olympics are 2010 Winter in Vancouver, 2012 Summer in London and 2014 Winter in Sochi, Russia. The Summer 2016 Games will be decided during an IOC meeting in October from among Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo,

According to the IOC, Phase 1 of the process, known as the candidature acceptance procedure, "involves a thorough review by the IOC of each city's potential to host the 2018 Games." The IOC said that cities would be asked to reply to a questionnaire and their answers will be studied by the IOC to help the executive board select the cities that will become Candidate Cities and move on to the next phase. Phase 1 is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2010 with the IOC executive board acceptance of candidate cities.

In Phase 2, also known as the candidature procedure, the candidate cities would be requested to submit their candidature files and prepare for the visit of the IOC evaluation commission. The evaluation commission visits would take place in February and March of 2011, with the election of the host city that July. Back to Home Page
