SAP Gets Founding Partner, Naming Rights Status At 49ers New Silicon Valley Venue

By Barry Janoff

September 24, 2012: The NFL's San Francisco 49ers, in the process of building a stadium in Santa Clara, signed a deal with global business software and analytics firm SAP to become a founding partner at the new venue and the naming rights holder at the team's practice facility.

Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed.

The 49ers are scheduled to move from Candlestick Park in San Francisco to the 68,500-seat stadium about 45 miles south in Santa Clara, in time for the 2014 NFL season. The SAP Training Center will be located adjacent to the new stadium.

With the stadium based in the heart of Silicon Valley, the team is loading up on technology company partners. Other founding partners include data storage provider Violin Memory and networking and technology solutions firm Brocade.

Under terms of the deal, SAP will be the team's exclusive business software, statistics and performance partner. SAP said it would support the 49ers "year-round operations by enabling the organization to run better in all facets."

In addition to building a statistics platform, SAP said it would also develop human resource  systems for the franchise as well as other "creative systems that have the potential to help football operations function more efficiently and effectively."

"SAP has an unparalleled reputation for creating world-class business software and analytics solutions," Jed York, 49ers CEO (pictured above, left), said in a statement. "The 49ers are deeply committed to creating the ultimate fan experience, as we are building a stadium that embodies the best of Silicon Valley. SAP will have an integral role in helping to achieve both of those goals. SAP's commitment to rename our training facility reinforces the alignment of two strong brands."

"The 49ers are deeply committed to creating the ultimate fan experience, as we are building a stadium that embodies the best of Silicon Valley."

The 49ers said that the $1.2 billion stadium would house entertainment and other sports events and "can be expanded for major events such as the Super Bowl." The franchise has won five Super Bowls, most recently Super Bowl XXIX in 1995. The only time a Super Bowl was played in the San Francisco Bay Area was in 1985 at Stanford Stadium, in which the 49ers defeated the Miami Dolphins, 38-16.

According to Bill McDermott, co-CEO for SAP, "The San Francisco 49ers are a team that knows how to win championships, and SAP is pleased to join them in delivering the ultimate experience to their fans. Together, we will extend the excitement of game-day with unprecedented levels of insight and intimacy. As SAP continues to grow its presence in the Bay Area, we look forward to helping one of the region's trophy franchises run better than ever."
