You Can Bet On It: AAF Signs Deal To Play Championship Games In Las Vegas

By Barry Janoff

October 23, 2018: The Alliance of American Football, which last month unveiled the names and logos for its eight franchises and earlier this month released its inaugural scheduled, has now chiseled in the venue for its first two championship games.

AAF said it has signed a two-deal to play its  2019 and 2020 Alliance championship games in Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium.

The inaugural Alliance championship game is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2019, to be broadcast nationally on CBS.

AAF said its championship game will mark the first time people can make in-game bets while in the stands of an Alliance event, placing legal wagers through AAF partner MGM Resorts’ sports betting platform.

“Las Vegas has a proven track record of success hosting large-scale sporting events, making it an ideal destination for our championship games,” Charlie Ebersol, co-founder and CEO for AAF, said via the league.

“It is also fitting that our final game takes place in the Mecca of sports betting, as our proprietary tech platform and partnership with MGM Resorts will revolutionize the sports wagering experience for fans.”

AAF said that as an investor in the league’s technology and its official sports betting sponsor, “MGM will leverage second-generation stats captured by The Alliance to better assess odds in real-time and provide unique in-game bets.”

The deal was done with Las Vegas Events, which works with venues throughout Las Vegas to secure jewel events.

Sam Boyd Stadium is home to the UNLV Rebels, Las Vegas Bowl, AMA Supercross Series Finals and Vegoose music festival. Capacity is about 40,000.

The venue has also been mentioned as a possible temporary home for the NFL's Oakland Raiders should they have to move out of Oakland for the 2019 season before their new stadium in Las Vegas is completed, which currently is scheduled to open for the 2020 season.

The Alliance is scheduled to begin play the weekend of Feb. 9-10, 2019, with games on CBS.

People will also be able to stream Alliance games live via the free Alliance app

The NFL ends its 2018 season just a week before, at Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3, 2019, in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta.

“One of the driving factors behind the vision of The Alliance was the fact that millions of Americans simply stop watching sports and playing fantasy every February, the moment a Super Bowl champion is crowned,” said Ebersol. “There’s a significant void in the market that will now be filled with top-flight, professional football.

“The reception thus far in each of our eight markets has been tremendous, and unveiling our season one schedule is yet another significant milestone for the league. There are exciting match-ups and storylines unfolding, and The Alliance is looking forward to giving fans exactly what they want — more football.”

Regarding the championship game, according to Ebersol, “The atmosphere will be electric, we look forward to hosting an incredible matchup at Sam Boyd Stadium to conclude our inaugural season, and we’re grateful to our partners at LVE for helping make this happen.”
