Beleaguered Alliance Of American Football Is Sacked In Inaugural Season Of Play

By Barry Janoff

April 2, 2019: Add the AAF to the USFL, the original XFL, UFL, WFL, PSFL, FXFL and other pro football leagues that tried to get a taste of the NFL's billions-of-dollars pie.

Eight games into its inaugural ten-game season, the Alliance of American football has suspended operations.

The decision was made by Tom Dundon, majority owner of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, who invested in the league in February and was named AAF chairman, in effect becoming majority owner.

The AAF was co-founded by Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian.

”My thanks go out to all who made our football product so competitive and professional," Polian said today in a statement. "I am certain there are many among them destined for future success in the NFL and I look forward to doing all I can to help them in their quest."

"I sincerely regret that many that believed in this project will see their hopes and efforts unrewarded. They gave their best for which I am deeply grateful. Unfortunately, Mr. Dundon has elected this course of action.

“The momentum generated by our players, coaches and football staff had us well positioned for future success. Regrettably, we will not have that opportunity,” wrote Polian.

There were several red flags during the AAF’s short-lived time, including a Week 1 payroll snafu that coincided with Dundon’s investment — initially put at $250 million but then modified to about a quarter that amount — and the league switching the site of its championship from Las Vegas to The Star, owned by Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys, located in Frisco, Texas.

TV viewership for for the league started at about three million, then settled in at between 400,000-500,000, according to industry analysts.

Ebersol, also AAF CEO, is a veteran TV and film producer whose father, Dick Ebersol, former chairman for NBC Sports and now a senior advisor for NBC Universal Sports and Olympics.

Polian spent 24 years as an NFL GM (including the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers), is a six-time recipient of the NFL Executive of the Year award and was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“We didn’t have the infrastructure to support the business side and that allowed the costs to get out of control," Polian said to the media.

The best team by record was the Orlando Apollos (7-1), in which Shaquille O’Neal has claimed at an undisclosed ownership.

“Everybody wanted to play out the season and everybody is disappointed,” Apollos head coach Steve Spurrier, a former NFL player and NFL and collegiate head coach, told the Orlando Sentinel.

“Everyone was led to believe that the Alliance was well funded and we could play three years without making and money and this, that and the other. Obviously, everything that was said was not very truthful.

“When the new owner came in, we thought we had financial backing and we’d be able to at least play out the season,” Spurrier said. “We never thought it would end like this.”

AAF said it had signed more than 400 players. Head coaches included such former NFL players and/or head coaches as Spurrier, Mike Singletary, Brad Childress, Dennis Erickson and Mike Martz

Well-traveled pro football quarterback Johnny Manziel, who was sent packing by the CFL after a short stint, played parts of two games in the AAF, the second of which he suffered a head injury.

“If you’re an AAF player and the league does dissolve (t)he last check you got will be the last one that you get,” he posted to his Twitter account today.

“No lawsuit or anything else will get you your bread. Save your money and keep your head up. It’s the only choice at this point unless something drastic happens.

“Just the reality of this unfortunate situation.. great concept, good football on the field and fun for fans to watch. Just not enough money to go around which has been the main problem with “other” leagues for a long time,” wrote Manziel.

The majority of games aired on CBS and CBS Sports Network.

The eight-team league also has broadcast deals with Turner Sports and NFL Network.

During a media conference call in early March, Polian was optimistic about the league’s future.

“I wouldn’t say what has happen so far is surprising. Our hope was that we could put a product on the field that would be real football by real football people for real football fans.

"No gimmicks," said Polian. "No out-of-this-world promotional plays and formations. We have some different rules from the NFL but it looks basically the same.

“We’re beginning to look at next season and start to plan for recruiting efforts, signing players. There’s always a lot of movement of players during the off-season and I suspect there will be a fair amount going to the NFL.”

Polian said that one innovation, an added referee known as Sky Judge who sits in the press box and oversees all playes, had been a success to date.

MGM Resorts International was an investor.

Partners also include Aramark, Riddell, Starter, Topps and New Era.

The XFL, under the direction of WWE boss Vince McMahon, is scheduled to premiere its eight-team league February 2020, which would have coincided with Season 2 for the AAF.

Oliver Luck, XFL commissioner and CEO, said during a recent media conference call that the league was waiting another year to launch because it “gives us time to get the game, fan experience and our partnerships right. We believe we are well on our way.”
