Tech Company ABB In Driver’s Seat With $100M FIA Formula E Title Sponsorship

By Barry Janoff

January 9, 2018: The people who are associated with FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) Formula E — the world's first all-electric street racing series — believe theirs is the racing circuit of the future.

The organization received a major boost to support that claim with the signing of Swiss technology company ABB as title sponsor to seven-year alliance through 2025.

Beginning with a race this weekend, the circuit will now be known as the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but industry analysts valued it at $100 million.

"Today, two pioneers are uniting,” ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer said during a media conference in London, where Formula E is headquartered. “ABB and Formula E are a natural fit at the forefront of the latest electrification and digital technologies.

“Together, we will write the next phase of this exciting sports activity and foster high-performance teams."

The alliance was supported by multi-media marketing, including an intro spot, “Now We Become The ABB FIA Formula E Championship.”

The deal comes as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Nissan join the series within the next year, “adding to the long list of car companies using Formula E to drive forward the development of road-ready mobility technology,” according to ABB FIA Formula E.

Current teams include Audi Sport, MS & AD Andretti, Jaguar Racing, Virgin Racing, Mahindra Racing, Renault and Venturi.

In addition to ABB, sponsors include Allianz, BMW, Boss, Julius Bär Banking, Michelin, Qualcomm, Tag Heuer and Visa.

In what has been has year of big changes in motor sports — including Monster Energy taking over for Sprint as title sponsor for the lead Nascar Cup Series and Liberty Media acquiring Formula 1 — sponsors are still spending on motorsports activation but at a slower rate than predicted.

Global spending on motorsports sanctioning bodies, teams and tracks hit $5.75 billion in 2017, up 3.1% from $5.58 billion in 2016, according to research and consulting firm ESP Properties, Chicago.

"Our two companies are synonymous with pushing the boundaries of what is possible," series founder and CEO Alejandro Agag said at the event.

“With Formula E serving as a competitive platform for global car manufacturers and mobility providers to test and develop road-relevant technologies, both ABB and Formula E share the same vision of a future where electric mobility is the preferred form of transportation,” said Agag.

Formula E, which began competition in 2014, is now in its fourth season, with the next round of the 2017-18 championship taking place this weekend in Marrakesh.

The upcoming also includes Santiago (Feb. 3), Mexico City (March 3), Punta del Esta (March 17), Rome (April 14), Paris (April 28), Berlin (May 19), Zurich (June 10), New York (July 14-15) and two addition dates TBD (July 28-29).

“Together, we will write the next phase of this exciting sports activity and foster high-performance teams."

Formula E said that the New York E-Prix, being staged in Brooklyn, will be the first FIA-sanctioned motorsports event to take place in any of the five boroughs of New York in modern history.

The 1.2 mile circuit features ten turns winding through the waterfront neighborhood of Red Hook, with views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty

According to driver Antonio Felix da Costa, “To be the first FIA series to race in New York City is going to be amazing and the track layout looks really cool. We are going to be racing in a central part of New York City, one of the greatest cities in the world!

“To have a motorsports race, especially with Formula E, where we are part of the innovation of all the electric powertrains in the world, we will create awareness for all the people that have had question marks about this,” said da Costa.
