National Champion Alabama Tide Tops StubHub List Of In-Demand CFB Games

By Barry Janoff

August 15, 2018: Winning the college football’s National Championship has its perks.

For the first time in five seasons, the University of Michigan football team is not the most in-demand ticket on StubHub.

The Wolverines dropped to No. 2 after being ousted by the 2017 National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide, which moved up from No. 3 last season to No. 1.

Demand is up 45% year over year for Alabama games on StubHub, based on ticket sales.

The Crimson Tide also leads the list as a top seller in nine unique states, the most of any school.

Beyond Alabama itself, the states include Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho and the New England contingent of Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Alabama’s move to the top was “driven by eagerly anticipated Southeastern Conference rivalry match-ups against Auburn and Texas A&M returning to Bryant Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa,” according to StubHub.

The most in-demand game to date based on ticket sales is Miami vs. LSU at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in the Advocare Classic on Sept. 2. This game marks the first time these two schools have played since 2005.

Tickets are averaging $226 on StubHub.

However, the game with the highest average ticket price on StubHub is Michigan at Ohio State on Nov. 24, averaging $695.

Not far behind: Michigan at Notre Dame on Sept. 1, averaging $652.

The San Francisco-based ticket marketplace said its Top 10 ranking and Top 10 most in-demand games are based on the amount of ticket sales per team on its site (to date) for 2018 NCAAF regular season games.

"With key rivalry games at home this season, Alabama is seeing extraordinary demand on StubHub," Jill Krimmel, StubHub general manager for NCAA Sports and MLB, said in a statement.

"Coming off another national championship victory and given the additional excitement of these match-ups, it's understandable that we're seeing Alabama dethrone Michigan from a five-year reign."

According to StubHub, in addition to Michigan dropping from the top, only half the teams were on the Top Ten list last year, and four of the teams added to the Top 10 this season had never been placed higher than No. 15 in the past four years.

StubHub said it has NCAA deals with more than 60 universities, including the recently added partnership with Texas A&M.

At. No. 8, Texas Christian University is StubHub's top-trending team year-over-year, with demand for the Horned Frogs up 298% based on StubHub sales, “making the largest jump in demand among StubHub's Top 10 selling teams.”

Two team with big gains over the past three seasons are Penn State and Georgia.

The Bulldogs were ranked No. 15 in 2016 based on StubHub ticket sales, No. 4 last season and now No. 3 going into 2018.

The Bulldogs were ranked No. 18 in 2016, No. 14 last season and are now at No. 5.

The Top 5 also includes the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at. No. 4.

Big Ten is the most popular conference heading into the season for the fifth year in a row.

Overall, about 58% of regular season ticket sales on StubHub come from buyers located more than 120 miles away from the venue.

In Alaska, the Ole Miss Rebels are StubHub’s top-selling tickets. In Nevada, LSU is No. 1. In Maine, the Ohio State Buckeyes top the StubHub list.

"College football fans are a different breed," said Krimmel. "There is a passion that is hard to find anywhere else, as we've seen fans are willing to travel greater distances to see their team play than any other sport."
