For Super Bowl LIII, All Bets ($6B) Are On For 22M People In The U.S.

By Barry Janoff

January 29, 2019: More than 100 million people are expected to watch the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3.

Not everyone will have a hometown interest in either the Pats or Rams or their players.

Some 22.7 million adults in America plan to bet on the game, wagering $6 billion on the outcome of Super Bowl LIII, according to a new survey released from the American Gaming Assn., Washington DC.

Of that number, 1.8 million plan to bet illegally through a bookie, with millions more likely to bet illegally through offshore online books.

As for the outcome of the game, 52% say they will bet on the Rams, while 48% will bet on the Patriots. according to AGA.

"The interest in legal, regulated sports betting in the United States has never been higher," Bill Miller, AGA's president and CEO, said via the organization.

According to a recent report from AGA,  the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL could realize a combined $4.2 billion annually not just from legal, regulated sports betting, but from such related platforms as increased consumption of the leagues' products, revenue as a result of spending by betting operators and data providers, advertising, sponsorship revenue and data.

The NFL alone could realize $2.3 billion in increased annual revenue.

“Legal, regulated sports betting will create huge new revenue opportunities for sports leagues — and the NFL could be the biggest winner of all," Sara Slane, svp-public affairs for the AGA, said via the group,

“Once legal sports betting expands across the country, the NFL could take in more than $2 billion a year, reinforcing how much sports leagues stand to gain from increased viewership and private partnerships with sports betting operators,” said Slane.

Caesar's Entertainment earlier this month signed a multi-year pact to become league's first “official casino partner."

The deal was was put at $30 million per year by industry analysts.

Caesar's also has deals with seven NFL clubs, including the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Oakland Raiders (with expanded elements when the franchise moves to Las Vegas for the 2020 season) and Philadelphia Eagles.

In September, the Dallas Cowboys became the first NFL team with a casino deal, signing a multi-year pact naming WinStar World Casino and Resort as the official casino of the team.

According to Miller, ”More Americans than ever before will be able to place their bets with legal sports books now operating in eight states, generating valuable revenue for state, local and tribal governments and increasing fan engagement with the game.”

"These results, however, also point to the continued viability of the dangerous, illegal sports betting market in America. It is more important than ever for jurisdictions to enact sound policies that provide a safe, legal alternative with protections for the nearly 23 million Americans who will place a bet on the big game."

AGA said the survey was conducted online by Morning Consult on Jan. 22, 2019 among a national sample of 2,201 adults.

Bettors include those who expect to place a bet online, with a bookie, with a casino sports book, in a pool or squares contest, or casually with a friend.
