It Will Be All Melo, All Day For Debut Of Carmelo Anthony In New York

February 23, 2011: The three-team trade that brought Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to the New York Knicks and also sent 11 other NBA players packing has officially become official.

Anthony is expected to hold a press conference at 5 PM on Feb. 23, then for the first time put on a Knicks uniform and play alongside fellow all-star Amar'e Stoudemire that evening at Madison Square Garden against the visiting Milwaukee Bucks.

Before anticipated sold-out Garden cheers and Madison Avenue deals start to rain down on him, MSG Network is dedicating a full day of programming to Anthony, with segments to include his official introduction as a member of the Knicks and ultimately his first game in a New York uniform. It will be a homecoming for Anthony, who was born in Brooklyn and attended college upstate at Syracuse, before spending the first seven seasons of his NBA career with the Denver Nuggets.

From 10 AM to Noon, MSG will show in condensed versions two Knicks-Nuggets games from earlier this season: Knicks at Denver Nuggets on Nov. 16, 2010, a 120-118 Nuggets win during which Anthony scored 26 points and had 9 rebounds; and the Nuggets at New York on Dec. 12, 2010, a 129-125 Knicks win during which Anthony had 31 points and 13 rebounds and Stoudemire had 30 points and 8 rebounds.

MSG will also air Anthony's NBA debut at Madison Square Garden from Dec. 13, 2003, when he scored 25 points and had 7 rebounds. That will be followed by a game that Knicks' fans hope repeats itself but for his new home team: Nov. 27, 2009, when Anthony scored 50 points.

In addition, MSG’s Al Trautwig will provide live cut-ins and news updates from MSG Studios throughout the day.

Anthony and Billups are is expected to hit The Garden floor in their Knicks uniforms prior to the tip-off of his first game with New York at 7:30 PM. MSG will stay with the action post-game to get reactions from Anthony, Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni, teammates and others.

“Carmelo is one of the top pure scorers in the league and like Amar’e, I believe he will really embrace the opportunity to play back home in New York and help us continue our goal of building towards a championship,” D’Antoni said in a statement. “Chauncey is a winner and having a veteran point guard of his caliber will be extremely valuable in helping us win games, especially in the playoffs.

MSG will spend a lot of time getting viewers familiar with what essentially is a new Knicks roster.

“Carmelo is one of the top pure scorers in the league and like Amar’e, I believe he will really embrace the opportunity to play back home in New York."

As part of the Anthony deal, the Knicks also received from Denver guard Anthony Carter and forwards Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams. New York sent to the Nuggets forwards Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari, guard Raymond Felto and center Timofey Mozgov.

New York also traded centers Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph to the Minnesota Timberwolves for forward Corey Brewer. Denver acquired center Kosta Koufos from Minnesota, plus New York’s first-round draft pick in 2014, second-round picks in 2012 and 2013 and cash.

Long before the Anthony deal was finalized, the Knicks had planned Feb. 23 as a significant event, the second Legend's Night, in which such former team stars as Dick Barnett, Earl Monroe, John Starks, Allen Houston and Mark Jackson will be honored at halftime.
