Alvarez, Triple G And A Microwave Oven Star In New ESPN 'SportsCenter' Ad

By Barry Janoff

September 1, 2018: Canelo Álvarez, the lineal Middleweight World Champion,  and Gennady Golovkin (GGG), the undefeated WBC, WBA and IBO Middleweight World Champion, are scheduled to meet in the ring in a rematch of their rivalry on Sept. 15.

But before they face off in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas they met in the most unlikely of settings: an office cubicle.

The bad blood between the two fighters was put on hold long enough to film a humorous 30-second spot for ESPN’s This is SportsCenter, “Shared Cube,” a Hispanic version of which will air on ESPN Deportes and an English version on ESPN.

In the English-language version, SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett is standing alongside Oscar de la Hoya, iconic boxer, chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

"Canelo vs. GGG 2" is being presented by Golden Boy Promotions and GGG Promotions,

In the Hispanic spot, de la Hoya is with ESPN Deportes’ SportsCenter anchor Jorge Eduardo Sánchez.

Both versions see Alvarez and Glolovkin in an office cubicle, wearing boxing shorts and gloves while they work at computers.

“How can these guys be sharing (an office) cube?” asks de la Hoya.

Prometieron que no sería un problema,“ replies Sánchez. (“They promised it wouldn’t be a problem,” says Verrett in his version of the commercial.)

“Especially right next to the microwave,” says de la Hoya.

His comment is mysterious . . .  until a few seconds later when the microwave “dings” — sending both Alvarez and Triple G into boxing mode, facing one another in the middle of the cubicle.

It turns out that de la Hoya was the instigator as he pulls a bag of popcorn out of the microwave and offers some to his colleague.

“As soon I heard the sound of the microwave, I felt like it was the sound of the ring bell,” Canelo said on the ESPN Web site.

“My mind immediately responded and I told myself, There is nothing more to say here. I’m going to knock him out.”

According to Golovkin, “After pounding the keyboard at the ESPN offices, I’m ready to pound Canelo again on Sept. 15 at T-Mobile Arena.”

The spot will debut this week on SportsCenter in the U.S, Mexico and Central America.

The commercial was created in-house by ESPN Deportes and was shot in ESPN’s Los Angeles studios.

“We are thrilled to have been able to bring together these two boxing champions leading up to this long-awaited rematch for a This is SportsCenter campaign” Michelle Bella, vp-sales and consumer marketing for ESPN Deportes, said in a statement.

“ESPN’s This is SportsCenter campaign has a special place in fans’ hearts and we are delighted to bring that same lighthearted humor to our marketing creative for ESPN Deportes.”

There was no mention of the fact that the fight was originally scheduled to take place on May 5.

In February, Álvarez tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol and then again in March.

He was suspended for six months by the Nevada Athletic Commission, retroactive to the February test.

The fight in September will be after his suspension is served

The Canelo-GGG 2 is sponsored by Tecate, Hennessy, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Fred Loya Insurance, Interjet, Venom and Fathom Events.

It will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View.

A live in-theater broadcast of "Canelo vs. GGG 2" is being presented by Golden Boy Promotions, GGG Promotions and Fathom Events,

Their first meeting was on Sept. 16 last year, which ended in a split draw.
