Amazon Prime Adding, Enhancing Options For 2019 NFL ‘Thursday Night Football’

By Barry Janoff

September 25, 2019: After two exclusive games on NFL Network, NFL Thursday Night Football Presented by Bud Light Platinum is returning to Fox and Fox Deportes this week as well as Amazon Prime Video and Twitch.

The game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field (Sept. 26), will begin the second full season for Fox under a $3.3 billion, five-year deal and third for Amazon Prime under its current $130 million, two-year deal.

Amazon Prime said it would launch innovations or enhance previous options “allowing Prime members to experience the game they love like never before, with a new lineup of expert insight and analysis, access to robust live data and a simplified experience.”

Among the offerings from the paid subscription platform:

• In addition to the default Fox broadcast with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, Prime members can choose from two additional Prime Video exclusive audio streams: Hannah Storm and Andrea Kremer and U.K. English language broadcasters Derek Rae and Tommy Smyth.

NFL Next, a new 30-minute live show available exclusively on Prime Video each Thursday and produced by NFL Films.

• Prime Video will again produce multiple audio options to enable football fans around the world to customize their viewing experience.

• "X-Ray for Thursday Night Fooball," which “creates opportunities for fans to watch and understand the game without taking their eyes off the screen or missing a play" using the NFL's Next Gen Stats.

The enhancements coincide with the NFL celebrating its 100th season.

“We’re revolutionizing the way football fans stream Thursday Night Football and allowing Prime members to personalize how they watch and hear the game,” Marie Donoghue, vp-Prime Video Sports, said via the company.

“There’s something for every football fan — from deeper gameplay analytics at their fingertips, to differentiated commentary, to the ability to easily discover and watch on any device, anywhere in the world.”

NFL Next (7 PM ET each Thursday) will provide viewers with insight and commentary from Chris Long (two-time Super Bowl champion), Kay Adams (NFL Network) and Next Gen Stats expert James Koh.

NFL Next will host featured guests including current and former players, while Storm and Kremer will return to provide commentary, in addition to leading play-by-play and analysis.

According to Ross Ketover, CEO for NFL Films, “We’re excited to collaborate once again with Amazon Prime Video to produce a different kind of NFL show.

“To have the talents of Chris Long, one of the most insightful players to play this game, paired with a dynamic personality like Kay Adams makes for a show we think fans are going to love.”

As a defensive end, Long, now retired, was a member of the Super Bowl LI champion New England Patriots and the Super Bowl LII winning Eagles.

"X-Ray" will bring “some of the same Next Gen Stats previously available only to coaches and announcers to all Thursday Night Football fans on demand, on every play and at their fingertips, driving a deeper appreciation for the on field action.”

Available information includes a quarterback’s average time to throw, a running back’s average yards after contact and a wide receiver’s average yards of separation, which are enabled through Next Gen Stats’ real-time player tracking.

"X-Ray" is available for football fans streaming Thursday Night Fooball on Android, iOS, and Fire TV.

“We think both longtime sports fans and those new to the game will love watching and engaging with Thursday Night Fooball on Prime Video and Twitch,” said Donoghue.
