American Cancer Calls On IMG Colleges, Coaches, Fans To Fight Kids Cancer

September 14, 2016: When it comes to sports, there are a lot of statistics that can describe the action on the field or court.

But off the sports course, there are statistics with much more importance and harder-hitting impact.

Pediatric cancer is the second leading cause of death among children ages 1-14 in the U.S., and it is estimated that in 2016 there will be 10,380 new cancer cases diagnosed among children in the U.S., according to The American Cancer Society.

(The leading cause of death among children ages 1-14 in the U.S. is accidents/unintentional injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control.)

Motivated by that and other related urgent situations, IMG College, in collaboration with Curing Kids Cancer, and the American Cancer Society have unveiled A House United to Tackle Pediatric Cancer.

The program "targets college football fans through 12 of IMG’s partner universities to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer."

A House United to Tackle Pediatric Cancer brings together "college football coaches and ambassadors from across the country to ask fans to help raise funds for pediatric cancer programs and research," per ACS.

The universities involved include Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Houston, Mississippi, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Syracuse, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Washington.

All proceeds from the initiative will be used to support research and programs for pediatric cancer from the American Cancer Society.

"As the Society continues to work with the sports industry to fund cancer research and create world class cancer prevention initiatives, we are proud to expand our sports strategy to mobilize a new audience within college football to help save lives from childhood cancer," Sharon Byers, chief development officer for the American Cancer Society, said in a statement.

Marketing support includes in-stadium, on-campus, Internet, social media and a dedicated Web site for A House United to Tackle Pediatric Cancer, hosted by fund-raising online firm CrowdRise.

Among other items, the Web site enables people to donate directly to the cause through one of the 12 schools that are part of the effort. Running totals for each school will indicate the amount of money each has raised via the site.

"We are proud to expand our sports strategy to mobilize a new audience within college football to help save lives from childhood cancer."

The Web site also has mini-sites that speak directly to coaches, players, fans and other supporters of each school.

"Hey, Blue Devil Nation," text reads at the Duke destination. "Help (head football) Coach (David) Cutcliffe and the American Cancer Society, together with Curing Kids Cancer, as we are A House United to Tackle Pediatric Cancer. Join together with other college football fans from around the country by making a donation today. With your support, we can show the rest of the country that Blue Devil Nation is part of a united force against pediatric cancer by donating today.

"We are One Community. One University. One fight."

According to  Andrew Judelson, evp-sales and marketing for IMG College, "This partnership with the American Cancer Society will create an incredible platform for A House United to Tackle Pediatric Cancer to bring a very important message to the passionate collegiate sports audience.

"These 12 universities are making an impact well beyond the playing field, and they are leading the way for the support of pediatric cancer research and programs," said Judelson.
