A-Rod, Despite Beleaguered MLB Career, Burgeoning Star For ESPN, Fox Sports

By Barry Janoff

January 23, 2018: Alex Rodriguez had a stellar 22-year MLB career on the field, hitting 696 homers, driving in 2,086 runs and being named American League MVP three times.

But his career was dogged with allegations of PED use, which he denied and then later admitted.

He was suspended by MLB for 162 games — the entire 2014 season — while with the New York Yankees. He returned for two seasons, was released by the team in August of 2016, then retired.

This situation could keep him out of the Baseball Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible, as it has, to date, such players associated with PEDs as Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.

However, Rodriguez has since found a career of fame in front of the camera as a baseball analyst and commentator for Fox, which he joined in 2017, receiving this past season strong reviews for his work.

Now, in an unusual case of double-dipping, Rodriguez has signed a multi-year pact with ESPN to become part of the Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell telecast for the upcoming MLB season.

Rodriguez will continue to work with Fox for the MLB playoffs and World Series.

Financial terms of the ESPN deal were not released.

Rodriguez joins veteran baseball play-by-play broadcaster Matt Vasgersian (also in his first season with Sunday Night Baseball), analyst Jessica Mendoza and reporter Buster Olney reporting.

ESPN said the new Sunday Night Baseball team would make its official debut on Opening Day, March 29, to call ESPN’s telecast of the Los Angeles Dodgers-San Francisco Giants game.

The crew will then call the first official Sunday Night Baseball telecast of the season on April 1, which also features the Dodgers and Giants.

“I’m looking forward to this new chapter in my broadcasting career,” Rodriguez said in a statement.

“It’s an exciting time in baseball and now I get that front row seat to tell that story every Sunday night on ESPN as well as calling my fourth post season on Fox where I started this journey.”

In addition, Rodriguez will appear in several upcoming ESPN specials, also serving as executive producer of them. Details will be shared in the coming weeks, according to ESPN.

According to Stephanie Druley, ESPN svp-events and studio production, “Alex is one of the most recognizable personalities in all of sports, and he’s made a well-documented impact on the sports media landscape.v His dynamic personality and incredible baseball knowledge, combined with Matt Vasgersian’s expertise, enthusiasm and poise, make for terrific additions to Sunday Night Baseball.

“We’re appreciative to our MLB Network and Fox Sports counterparts, as all parties were more than willing to collaborate in order to serve Major League Baseball fans.”

This will be the 29th season of Sunday Night Baseball.

ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Schedule:
• April 1 San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers
• April 8 New York Mets at Washington Nationals
• April 15 Texas Rangers at Houston Astros
• April 22 Washington Nationals at Los Angeles Dodgers
• April. 29 New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels
• May 6 Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals
• May 13 Washington Nationals at Arizona Diamondbacks
• May 20 Cleveland Indians at Houston Astros
• May 27 San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs
• July 1 Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees
• July 22 New York Mets at New York Yankees
• July 29 Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals
• August 19 MLB Little League Classic

Additional Sunday Night Baseball selections for June through September will be made up to two weeks prior to the dates.
