ATP Opens International Media Rights Bid Process For Inaugural ATP Cup Competition

By Barry Janoff

February 27, 2019: In January, the ATP, the governing body for men's professional tennis, unveiled plans for the ATP Cup, to be played beginning in January 2020 across three Australian cities over ten days as a lead-in to the Australian Open.

Now, ATP and ATP Media — the global sales, broadcast production and distribution arm for the ATP Tour — said they would launch on March 4 the tender process for the sale of the international media rights to the ATP Cup.

The inaugural ATP Cup, presented in partnership with Tennis Australia, is scheduled for Jan. 3-12, 2020, to be played in Sydney, Brisbane and a third city to be named.

It will feature 129 matches across ten days, with many of the Top 60 ranked mens players in the world from 24 countries scheduled to compete seeking up to 750 ATP ranking points.

Prize money was put at $15 million by the ATP.

The next Australian Open is scheduled for Jan. 20-Feb. 2, 2020.

"The ATP Cup forms a key part of our innovative strategy to really drive forward the success of our sport and engage fans across the world,” Chris Kermode, ATP executive chairman and president, said via the organization.

“It's vital to start the season with a bang, which is why we're bringing the world's best players together for this fantastic new team event — scheduled at the optimum time for players, fans and broadcasters alike.”

Kermode said that the ATP Cup provides a “fantastic opportunity for broadcasters to bring the excitement of world class tennis to hundreds of millions of people across the globe."

According to the ATP, international broadcast content for the tournament will be fully produced by ATP Media in conjunction with Tennis Australia as host broadcaster.

Content would incorporate “not only a fully produced world feed showcasing the best of the action, but also the ability for broadcasters to show the action from every match via individual court feed — containing both graphics and English language commentary — press conferences, bespoke social media content and more.”

ATP said bidders would be given flexibility to bid for rights packages around their specific broadcast requirements — including single or multi-territory bids; as well as rights across linear, digital, OTT and VOD — with deals to be based around a minimum three-year contract.

ATP Media said it would manage the bid process for international broadcast rights.

According to Mark Webster, ATP Media CEO, "With its position in the calendar, the ATP Cup will enable broadcasters to kick off their ATP Tour season coverage in a manner they have not had before and, for the first time via ATP Media, to deliver a team event that brings a different dynamic to other tournaments.

“Working together with Tennis Australia, ATP Media is committed to ensuring the production values which it instils across all the tournaments it represents are carried through to the ATP Cup — delivering international broadcast coverage that is of the usual market-leading quality."

The ATP Cup will see nations split into six groups of four, with eight teams emerging from the round-robin stage to compete in the knockout phase until only one team is left standing.

There will be up to five players on each team, with ties comprising two singles matches and one doubles match.

The criteria for entry into the ATP Cup will be based on the ATP ranking of the No. 1 singles player from each country.

Per ATP: “Any parties interested in applying for international broadcast rights must submit their official applications by 18th April 2019, with ATP Media expecting to make a decision on the bids received on 29th April 2019.

“Any parties interested in submitting an expression of interest are invited to contact ATP Media via Gabrielle Guedj, Director of Commercial Rights Sales (Gabrielle.Guedj@atpmedia.tv) and Tom Bullock, General Counsel (Tom.Bullock@atpmedia.tv) under the heading "ATP MEDIA ATP CUP BID.”
