Money Shots: Becky Hammon Scores With BBVA, Anthony Davis With H&R Block

By Barry Janoff

December 22, 2015: BBVA Compass, the official bank of the NBA, continues to put its money where its mouth is, signing Becky Hammon, who this season signing as an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs became the first full-time female coach in the league, and Bruce Bowen, a three-time NBA champion with the Spurs.

Separately, H&R Block, the NBA’s tax services partner, has signed Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans as its first sports brand ambassador to star in a multi-media effort during the upcoming tax season.

Financial terms for the two respective deals were not disclosed.

Hammon and Bowen join Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard as BBVA Compass spokespersons in campaigns targeting the San Antonio and surrounding areas.

"We've chosen a trio of talented individuals to represent our brand in one of our most important markets," Manolo Sanchez, BBVA Compass chairman and CEO, said in a statement regarding the Spurs representatives. "They're champions and pioneers, and they're the kind of ambassadors who can inspire us to set higher goals and reach them."

BBVA Compass uses NBA All-Stars Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder and James Harden of the Houston Rockets in national marketing.

For H&R Block, Davis will appear in marketing alongside Richard Gartland, the brand’s bow-tie wearing tax pro, first in cameo appearances beginning mid-January, then as the star in spots set to brteak in February.

According to Kathy Collins, H&R Block’s CMO, "We’re excited to partner with a dominant player like Anthony for Refund Season. We’re so impressed with his determination and commitment to the community.

"Anthony has a lot of qualities our clients can relate to — even if his first job out of college has far more complex tax implications than most of ours," said Collins.

In addition to advertising, H&R Block said it would "leverage Davis for personal appearances throughout the season and partner with his charity, AD’s Flight Academy, for outreach and events in the local New Orleans community.

“Being part of a strong team is very important to me and H&R Block is the best team to have your back during tax time,” Davis, the NBA's overall No. 1 draft pick in 2012 (out of Kentucky) and a two-time All-Star, said in a statement.

Hammon, already an icon from her stellar playing days as a six-time All-Star in the WNBA, made NBA history in August 2014 when she was hired as an assistant coach for the Spurs, making her the first full-time, salaried female assistant coach in the league.

She then coached the Spurs during the 2015 NBA Summer League presented by Samsung, becoming the first female head coach of a Summer League team and the first female to win the title.

Hammon was named ESPNW's Woman of the Year in 2014 and recently was named to its "Impact 25" women for 2015 (pictured).

Bowen took home three championship trophies with the Spurs in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

BBVA Compass signed with the NBA in 2010 and renewed the deal in 2014.

H&R Block signed with the NBA this past January as the league's first official tax partner in what was also the brand's first pro sports marketing partnership in North America.
