• Octagon and the National Women’s Soccer League have signed a multi-tier consulting partnership, in which Octagon’s Global Media Rights Consulting and Marketing divisions will "advise the NWSL on its league media rights, sponsorship, and marketing." “The growth of the NWSL over the past six years has been tremendous, and the league, its teams and players show absolutely no sign of slowing down,” Christine Franklin, SVP, Marketing, Octagon, said via the firm.

Bottom’s Up: Beer Industry Brews 2.2M Jobs, More Than $350B For U.S. Economy

May 23, 2017: Sports fans are familiar with the big-name and micro-beer brewers who align with teams, leagues, organizations and events.

Now comes word that supporting the beer brands that support teams also helps to support the economy of the U.S.

According to a new study from the Beer Institute (Washington DC) and the National Beer Wholesalers Assn. (Alexandria, VA), the beer industry generates more than 2.2 million jobs and contributes more than $350 billion to the U.S. economy, providing $103.3 billion in wages and benefits to American workers and families.

"Beer is more than a refreshing adult beverage," Jim McGreevy, president and CEO for the Beer Institute, said in a statement. "The beer industry is vital to the United States."

Brewers and beer importers directly employ 64,745 Americans, about 58% of brewing jobs are linked to large and mid-sized brewers and beer importers and beer distributors directly employ 134,240 Americans, according to the study, Beer Serves America.

For every one job in a brewery or beer importer, another 33 jobs in other industries are supported. That includes jobs in retail (15.6), wholesaling (2.9), farming and other sectors (1.8) and other manufacturing jobs (1.4), per the study.

In addition, the total number of brewing facilities in the U.S. has grown by 1,375 in two years, "most being very small brewers or brew pubs."

Concurrently, large and regional brewers account for about 58% of total employment, according to the study.

"America's beer distributors are proud to provide nearly 135,000 jobs with solid wages and great benefits to employees at more than 3,000 facilities, located in every state and congressional district across the country," Craig Purser, NBWA president and CEO, said in a statement. "Independent beer distributors generate significant economic contributions in their communities through local business-to-business commerce, investments in local infrastructure and capital assets and tax revenue.

"Through a wide range of services, distributors work to build beer brands of all kinds — from large, familiar labels to start-up, craft brands and imports from around the world — and to deliver vast consumer choice in the marketplace,” said Purser.

According to the Beer Institute and NBWA, there are basically four types of brewing firms in the country.

Large brewers — which produce more than 2 million barrels of malt beverages per year — include Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors and Pabst Brewing Co. This category also lists a number of companies that began production after federal brewing laws were changed in the late 1970s, such as The Boston Beer Co. (which produces Samuel Adams), according to the report.

Anheuser-Busch said that it has more than 17,000 employees, brewing more than 100 brands in 21 U.S. breweries. The company said it is "investing close to $500 million in 2017 alone, and longer-term investments of $2 billion through 2020."

According to Beer Serves America, "Such major international brewing companies as Heineken USA, Diageo and Constellation Brands Beer Division also have substantial domestic sales and service operations, in addition to their investments in U.S. based breweries, that are included in the brewing figures.

"There are also several dozen regional brewers in the country which are sizable and have national distribution. They generally produce less than 2 million barrels of malt beverages per year. These include a number of well-known companies: Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Craft Brew Alliance, Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Bell’s Brewery."

The last type of brewing firms, brew-pubs and small micro-brewers, number in the thousands and are located throughout America, according to the Beer Institute and NBWA.

"These firms produce beer for a limited market — sometimes only for their own restaurant or retail establishment. All told, these firms employ 64,745 Americans in brewing or importing operations, sales, packaging and direct distribution."

According to McGreevy, "Beer Serves America demonstrates how brewers, beer importers and beer industry suppliers are creating jobs, providing wages and benefits to working Americans and supporting the economy in every state and every congressional district."

 Among other highlights in Beer Serves America:

• Overall, the beer industry contributes more than $350 billion in economic output, which is equal to nearly 1.9% of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product.

• Suppliers to the brewing industry — enterprises that manufacture bottles, cans and kegs, cardboard case boxes, brewing equipment or marketing displays — generate nearly $115.3 billion in economic activity and are responsible for more than 491,800 jobs alone.

• More than $63 billion in tax revenue is generated by the production and sale of beer and other malt beverages. On average 41% of what consumers paid at retail for beer went to a tax of some kind, including local sales taxes, consumption taxes, business taxes, and the federal excise tax on beer. This is led by more than $49 million in business and personal taxes and more than $14 million in excise and state sales taxes.

According to the Beer Institute and NBWA, the Beer Serves America study was compiled by independent economics firm John Dunham & Associates. "It is the most comprehensive analysis of the industry available, using data collected directly from private companies, Dun & Bradstreet, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Alcohol Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis."
