Bellator MMA Teams With Perform Group, DAZN In $100M Global Alliance

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

June 26, 2018:
The UFC has been making headlines of late with its $1.5 billion ESPN alliance.

Perform Group, under the direction of executive chairman John Skipper, the former ESPN president, is now helping UFC rival Bellator MMA to make news worldwide.

Perform Group has signed a multi-year deal with Bellator MMA to air matches over DAZN, Perform Group’s expanding live and on-demand streaming service.

Financial terms of the deal were put at $100 million by industry analysts.

The alliance includes seven exclusive matches per year on DAZN and 15 others simulcast on DAZN and Paramount Network, which like Santa Monica, Calif.-based Bellator, is owned by Viacom.

DAZN currently operates in such countries as Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Japan, with the. U.S. and others to launch this year.

"The exciting new partnership with DAZN is a game-changer for Bellator," Scott Coker, Bellator president, said during a media event in Viacom headquarters in New York. "The investment will enable us to continue expanding our roster with free agents that make sense, so we can put on PPV-worthy fight cards that fans want to see.

“Plus, on DAZN's worldwide platform, our fights will be seen live for the first time to new audiences around the globe."

According to James Rushton, DAZN CEO, ”Fans want to see great fighters in competitive fights so we've handed the keys to Scott Coker and his venerable team to go out and recruit even more top-level talent to further stack Bellator fight cards and build on their success.

”With the combination of this investment and our recent announcement to bring more than 30 nights of boxing to the platform annually, DAZN will be a must-have for fight fans in the U.S."

The deal is scheduled to begin Sept. 29 from SAP Center at San Jose.

The card features a middleweight title fight between Gegard Mousasi and Rory MacDonald; and the fourth fight between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Wanderlei Silva.

Perform Group last month signed a joint-venture deal with Matchroom Boxing with the intent to “re-ignite the sport of boxing in the U.S. for fans.”

The eight-year pact was put at $1 billion and called “the biggest-ever deal in boxing.”

Global sports media company Perform Group and Matchbox Boxing are both based in the U.K.

DAZN also airs NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL content.

“Bellator is a great franchise that has been developing over the past few years as a challenger to UFC, backed by Viacom."

“Bellator is a great franchise that has been developing over the past few years as a challenger to UFC, backed by Viacom,” said Perform Group CEO Juan Delgado at the media event. “With us getting behind it, we’re looking to supercharge Bellator in the sense of creating a set of exclusive fights on DAZN.”

“What we can do now is build a foothold in what we still see as interesting verticals—fight sports being one of them.”

Delgado said that Perform Group wants to be in a position where, “if the NFL is considering an OTT partner for any of its packages, we are not starting from zero, we’ve got a customer base and can show them a path to growth.

"But it’s so far out that we’re worried about the immediate opportunity, which is still interesting.”
