Back On The Front Line: David Ortiz Returns To MLB As Analyst For Fox Sports

David Ortiz has been anything but quiet since he retirement from MLB after the 2016 season, but now “Big Papi; has a license to speak after signing a multi-year deal to appear as a studio analyst for Fox.

Ortiz, who contributed as studio analyst throughout Fox Sports’ coverage of the 2017 post-season, is scheduled to make his 2018 debut during the network’s coverage of the 89th All-Star Game presented by Mastercard from Nationals Park in Washington, DC. on July 17.

In his expanded role, Fox said that Ortiz would contribute to Fox Sports’ spring training, regular season, All-Star Game, post-season and World Series coverage.

As he did during the 2017 post-season, Ortiz will work with Frank Thomas, Alex Rodriguez and host Kevin Burkhardt during MLB on Fox.

“Big Papi brings a level of excitement and knowledge that balances nicely with Alex, Frank and Kevin,”  John Entz, Fox Sports president of production & executive producer, said in a statement.

“David is incredibly likable and has unbelievable post-season experience. And we think we’re set in the hitter department.”

Prior to his retirement, Ortiz made his broadcasting debut during the 2014 World Series, for Games 1 and 2, as a guest studio analyst for Fox Sports.

Ortiz has given new meaning to the word “retirement” since leaving MLB after 20 seasons with 541 career home runs (plus 17 in the post-season) and 1,768 RBIs and being selected to ten All-Star Games.

Ortiz spend six years with the Minnesota Twins and played 14 years with the Boston Red Sox, winning with the Red Sox three World Series championships: 2004, 2007 and 2013.

He also has been involved in numerous endeavors: promoting cigars, beer, chips, salsa, T-shirts and The David Ortiz Children's Fund; going golfing; attending World Series games; and appearing in campaigns including John Hancock, JetBlue, TurboTax, Dunkin’ Donuts, MLBAM, ESPN, Omaze, Skechers and Amazon.

In May 2017 he released his book, Papi: My Story.

According to Ortiz, “I had a lot of fun working for Fox Sports during the post-season last year and am pumped up to get back in the studio with Kevin, Alex, Frank and our leader behind-the-scenes, coordinating producer Bardia Shah-Rais.”
