June 7, 2022: The International Tennis Federation said today that the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup by BNP Paribas Finals would be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, under the auspices of Great Britain’s Lawn Tennis Assn.
The “Women’s World Cup of Tennis” Finals are scheduled to be played on indoor hard courts in the Emirates Arena, Nov. 8-13.
Great Britain, as host nation, now joins Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, Switzerland and the U.S. in the Finals.
“We are delighted to be bringing the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup by BNP Paribas Finals to Glasgow,” ITF president David Haggerty said via the organization.
“The LTA presented a very impressive bid as part of a competitive hosting process. They have successfully hosted Davis Cup ties in Glasgow, and we look forward to having the women’s World Cup of Tennis take place in front of passionate tennis fans from around the world in an electric atmosphere, at the culmination of the women’s tennis season.”
This will be the fourth time that Great Britain has hosted the Finals of the event.
Launched in 1963 as the Federation Cup to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ITF, the first event was held in London’s Queen’s Cub, with Billie Jean King herself a member of the winning U.S. team.
The competition was also held in Eastbourne in 1977 and Nottingham in 1991.
The event was renamed in 2021 to honor the tennis icon.
The 2021 Billie Jean King Cup finals were held in Prague following two postponements in 2020 due to COVID-19 protocols, and won by Russia.
“We have said that we were ambitious to bring more major events to Great Britain and raise the profile of tennis across the whole year, and I’m delighted that Glasgow will be hosting the Billie Jean King Cup Finals as well as the Davis Cup Finals Group stage this year,” Scott Lloyd, chief executive for the LTA, said via the organization.
"The first-ever finals were held in Great Britain in 1963, and it’s brilliant that the finals will be returning here for the first time since 1991. This gives us a great chance to open tennis to more people and create special memories that we hope will inspire the next generation of players.”
The U.S. has won the tournament a record 18 times, most recently in 2017.
Billie Jean King Cup organizers said information regarding the draw and ticketing for the Finals would be unveiled as the event approaches.
