August 19, 2013: Andy Murray, 2012 gold medal winner and Wimbledon 2013 champion, was in New York on Monday, not to talk as much about defending his title at the U.S. Open beginning Aug. 26 as the 7th annual BNP Paribas Showdown on March 3, 2014.
In the friendly rivalry exhibition, one match will feature world's No. 3 ranked Murray against No. 1 ranked Novak Djokovic. The second match will pit world's No. 1 ranked men's doubles team and brothers Mike and Bob Bryan against a pair of classic tennis brothers, John and Patrick McEnroe.
The BNP Paribas Showdown, which will take place in New York's Madison Square Garden and air on MSG Network, is produced by MSG Sports and StarGames. It will culminate a full day of global tennis activations under the umbrella themes “Tennis Night in America” and “World Tennis Day,”
Marketing support, which will include TV, print, outdoor, Internet and fan activation in the New York area, is playing up "The Rematch," a reference to Murray's stirring win over Djokovic in the finals at Wimbledon and the 2012 U.S. Open and Djokovic's win over Murray in the finals of the Australian Open this past January.
John McEnroe is the only one among the participants who who has previously played in Madison Square Garden.
“I'm excited about coming to the Garden next year," Murray said at the press event on Aug. 19. "Ivan (tennis icon Ivan Lendl, who is Murray's coach and a past BNP Paribas Showdown participant) has told me plenty of stories about matches and other events that have taken place there. There is so much history attached to the venue and it should be a great night for both Novak and me."
“I am looking forward to coming to Madison Square Garden,” Djokovic said in a statement. “I have heard nothing but great things about this event and it should be a big night for tennis in New York, one of my favorite places to play.”
The BNP Paribas Showdown 2013 featured Rafael Nadal versus Juan Martin del Potro and Serena Williams against Victoria Azarenka. in addition to title sponsor BNP Paribas, sponsors included Geico, Delta, Kia and Marriott.

Other players who have participated in the BNP Paribas Showdown in New York include Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki.
