Hair Or There: Bryce Harper Of (Team TBD) Named 'MLB The Show 19' Cover Athlete

By Barry Janoff

November 2, 2018: In June, while he was in free-agency transition between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James was named as the cover athlete for the NBA 2K19 20th anniversary edition, seen in a head shot but not a specific uniform.

Bryce Harper, now in free agency transition between the Washington Nationals and a team to be determined (possibly the Nationals?), has been named as the cover athlete for MLB The Game 19 from Sony’s Playstation.

In initial cover shots, Harper is seen wearing a nondescript hoodie.

An intro trailer, in which Harper is seen on the field in his Nationals uniform, asks, “Which jersey will Bryce wear on the final cover?”

It then entices people to “Follow Bryce’s journey @MLBTheShow.”

“First the Home Run Derby and now the cover of @MLBTheShow,” Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees, who was on the cover of MLB The Show 18, posted on Twitter. “Congrats man! #playstationambassador”

“Certainly the story of the day, and on everybody’s mind is what does the future hold for Bryce Harper?” says a voiceover in the MLB the Show 19 spot. “For an individual player this is the biggest story of the off-season.

“Where will he end up? We don’t know. He doesn’t know. But time will tell.”

His resume follows: “Six-time All-Star. 2015 NL MVP. 2018 Home Run Derby champion. The hair.”

“As free agency has begun, the world is left wondering: where will he be in 2019?,” Ramone Russell, game designer and online community manager, for Sony Interactive Entertainment America, San Diego, posted to the MLB The Show blog.

“We’re proud to announce Bryce Harper as the cover athlete of MLB The Show 19, and we are excited to partner with him for the reveal of his ‘2019 team on our upcoming final game cover art,”

According to promo material from Playstation, “Bryce’s unapologetic raw passion for the game and search for a potential team makes him the player to watch this off-season.

“We’re at the beginning of a new chapter in the epic MLB legacy of Bryce Harper. He’s got the skill and tenacity to be a Hall of Fame ballplayer. He’s got an explosive drive to win, and he’s hungrier than ever for a World Series ring.

“So, what jersey will Bryce champion on the final cover of MLB The Show 19? Follow The Show to see what the future holds for baseball’s most exciting free agent and what jersey he’ll be wearing on The Show 19."

The game will hit retail March 26, 2019.

Sony Playstation is touting four versions: the Standard Edition; a Digital Deluxe Edition available via the Playstation Store; Gone Yard Edition, a GameStop exclusive, which offers an exclusive New Era Gone Yard 9Fifty hat and a limited MVP Gone Yard Steel Book; and the MVP Edition.

According to Sony Playstation, “When you pre-order, you will receive 10 Standard Packs and 1 Gold Player Choice Pack for The Show 19 when you pick-up or download the game from any participating retailer.

“Pre-order at GameStop and receive an additional 1 Gear Up Choice Pack. Lastly, if you pre-order on PlayStation Store, you’ll also get 5,000 Stubs for MLB The Show 19 and instantly receive a Bryce Harper MVP Flashback Card you can use right now in MLB The Show 18.”
