PepsiCo Bubly Enlists Singer BublĂ© To Sing Brand Praises During Super Bowl LIII

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

January 17, 2019:
Singer Michael Bublé may have won four Grammy awards, but he’s a bit off key when it comes to Bubly, the sparkling brand water from PepsiCo.

PepsiCo said the brand would make its first Super Bowl appearance with a 30-second humorous spot featuring Canadian crooner Bublé.

PepsiCo will also have presence during Super Bowl LIII Feb. 3 on CBS with spots for Doritos (starring Chance the Rapper) and Pepsi, and via the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show.

According to PepsiCo, Bublé is absolutely convinced that Bubly is in fact, Bublé – specifically named after him.”

In the spot, “Bublé thinks it's a Bublé world and we're all just living in it,” according to PepsiCo.

It includes comedian and actress Aparna Nancherla and others trying to convince Bublé otherwise.

A teaser spot, “Can I Have A Bublé?” released by the brand shows Bublé going to places that sell Bubly and using a Sharpie to change the name on the cans to Bublé, with the text, “Bublé vs Bubly.”

Lead agency is Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.

"I might be Canadian, but I'm a big fan of American football," said singer, actor, producer Bublé via PepsiCo. "I had a blast doing my very first Super Bowl commercial with Bublé — I mean Bubly.

"Because of our similar names, the brand and I share a special bond. I love how the cans are bold, bright and full of personality. They're perfect for any Super Bowl viewing partés you might be having."

Bubly, which launched last year, is “on track to exceed $100 million in retail sales in its first year,” according to PepsiCo.

"Sparkling water fans across the country have fallen in love with Bubly and now we're thrilled to show-off its fun personality on the world's biggest stage," Stacy Taffet, vp-water portfolio for PepsiCo, said via the company.

"With this spot, we knew we had one job to do — get people to crack a smile — and there was one person we knew could help us do it: Michael Bublé.

According to Taffet, "With his help, not only do we get to set the record straight that it's bubly, not bublé, but we also get to introduce Bubly's four new flavors."

They are Blackberrybubly, Cranberrybubly, Raspberrybubly and Peachbubly, all featured in the ad, which join the brand's current portfolio of eight flavors.

Thirty-second spots during the game are averaging $5 million-plus, according to industry analysts.
