Golden Opportunity: Budget Nears $7B For 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

April 30, 2019:
Calling it a “comprehensive look at the project from start to finish,”  LA 2028 has released the results of an independently researched budget showing the 2028 Summer Games will need $6.9 billion to bring the event to fruition.

According to LA 2028, “The privately funded, balanced budget . . .  exemplifies an innovative, fiscally responsible and sustainable Games.

“The $6.9 billion budget is an output of the LA 2028 Games Plan, which maximizes use of the city’s existing world-class stadiums, training facilities and venue infrastructure.”

LA 2028 is the non-profit, privately funded organization responsible for delivering the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

An original budget estimate of $5.3 billion was made in 2017, when Los Angeles was still focusing its bid on the 2024 Summer Games.

A decision by the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2024 Summer Games to Paris and the 2028 Games to Los Angeles.

The finances were Independently evaluated by leading accounting firm KPMG.

Adjusted for inflation, LA 2028’s “real dollar budget is directly in line with the budget proposed for the 2024 Games bid, plus 3% (approximately $200 million) that includes a $160 million investment in local youth sports and four additional years of operation.”

Revenue for the Games includes a significant contribution from the International Olympic Committee, domestic sponsors, ticket sales, hospitality, licensing and merchandising.

NBCUniversal and LA 2028 this month formed an alliance that includes media, sponsorship and activation opportunities in the U.S. for the Olympic and Paralympic Games from 2021-2028.

The agreement “gives brands the ability to connect with audiences across Olympic and Paralympic touch-points throughout the next decade,” including the 2024 and 2028 Summer Games.

By comparison, the most recent reports on the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo put the budget more than $12 billion, which had been cut from an earlier $14 billion and with more cuts likely to come to appease the IOC.

“Our budget is privately funded, realistic and fiscally conservative,” Casey Wasserman, LA 2028 chairperson, said via the organization.

“We are redefining what it means to host a successful Games and look forward to planning and hosting an amazing experience that will make our community proud.”

LA 2028 said the 2028 Summer Games “require no complex and costly construction projects or Games-related public infrastructure.

“The budget reflects LA 2028’s Games Plan, which builds on principles outlined in the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Agenda 2020”

LA 2028 said it would use UCLA for the Olympic and Paralympic Village, USC for the Main Press Center and Media Village and existing venues across Los Angeles to deliver the Games.
