Bull In A China Shop: NBA, China Face Issues Over Hoops, Money, Free Speech

By Barry Janoff

Update October 9, 2019: The NBA postponed today’s scheduled media sessions in Shanghai for the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers “Given the fluidity of the situation, today’s media availability has been postponed.” Numerous other scheduled events have been canceled.

According to CNBC, of the 25 official partners listed on the NBA China Web site, 13 are Chinese businesses.

Ctrip.com, Anta Sports, Changhong, Meiling, Dicos, EHi Car Rental, Master Kong, China Mengniu Dairy, Migu Video, WuZun and Xiaoyin Technology are among the companies that have ended or suspended their cooperation with the NBA, according to Chinese public statements translated by CNBC.

Tencent, Luckin Coffee and Vivo previously suspended their relationships with the NBA.

October 8, 2019: The tweet heard around the world — even in China where Twitter is banned — has put the NBA between a a financial situation involving billions in investment and growth and the priceless freedom of speech.

Now, league commissioner Adam Silver is trying to make the best of a situation that might have no definitive resolution.

The situation began with a tweet from Houston Rockets’ GM Daryl Morey regarding the ongoing volatile situation in Hong Kong, which is under the rule of China but seeking more independence. “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong,” tweeted Morey.

Since deleted, the seven-word statement led government officials in China to demand retribution, and led Silver to issue an initial statement that to many seemed to put his loyalties behind the NBA’s business interests in China rather than Morey’s right to express his opinion.

Silver and the NBA then issued another statement of clarification that, while seeking to placate China, stood more firmly behind Morey’s right to express his personal feelings.

Two exhibition games this week in China between the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets — in Shanghai Oct.10, Shenzhen Oct. 12 — were put in jeopardy, China TV said it would not air the games, China-based NBA marketing and media partners cut ties with the Houston Rockets and threatened to also cut league ties.

Joseph Tsai, majority owner of the Nets and co-founder of the China-based Alibaba Group, offered on social media, “The hurt this incident has caused will take a long time to repair.”

“We’re strongly dissatisfied and oppose Adam Silver’s claim to support Morey’s right to freedom of expression,” China Central TV wrote in a statement. “We believe that any remarks that challenge national sovereignty and social stability are not within the scope of freedom of speech.”

“There are consequences from his freedom of speech and we will have to live with those consequences.,” Silver said during a media conference in Tokyo for a pre-season game between the Rockets and Toronto Raptors, en route to China. “I’m a realist. I realize that this issue may not die down soon.

“I’m sympathetic to our interests here and our partners that are upset,” said Silver. “I don’t think it’s inconsistent on one hand to be sympathetic to them and at the same time stand by our principles.”

“I’m hoping that together Yao Ming (Basketball Hall of Famer from China who spent his NBA career with the Rockets and is now president of the China Basketball Assn.) and I can find an accommodation,” Silver said, planning a meeting with Ming in China this week. “But he is extremely hot at the moment, and I understand it.

“There's no question that Daryl's tweet has hit what I would describe as a third-rail issue in China. I think Yao is extremely unsettled. I'm not quite sure he accepts how we are operating our business right now."

NBA and partners such as Nike and adidas are not the only businesses with investments in China.

The 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing.

Among a series of tournaments in the country, the WTA China Open was just held in Beijing (won by Naomi Osaka), the Tianjin Open is now underway and the Shiseido WTA Finals will be held in Shenzhen later this month.

The ATP Shanghai Masters is now taking place.

The creators of MTV’s South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, entered the conversation after an episode of the animated series, "Band in China" (pictured), made fun of China’s government and policies and China responded by banning the show.

“Official apology to China from Trey Parker and Matt Stone," they posted to the South Park Twitter page. "Like the NBA, we welcome the Chinese censors into our homes and into our hearts. We too love money more than freedom and democracy.”

China-based telecom company Vivo in December extended its alliance with the NBA, which began in 2016, to remain presenting partner for the China Games thru 2020.

The NBA China Games 2019 would be the NBA’s 27th and 28th games in China, with 17 NBA teams having played games in Beijing, Guangzhou, Macao, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Taipei since 2004.

The NBA’s entity that conducts all of the league’s businesses in China was formed in January 2008.

Highlighting the events surrounding the two games was to be the eighth annual NBA Fan Day Presented by Dongfeng Nissan in Shanghai.

“We are not apologizing for Daryl exercising his freedom of expression,” Silver said in Japan. “I regret — again, having communicated directly with many friends in China — that so many people are upset, including millions and millions of our fans.

“At the end of the day, we come with basketball as an opportunity to sell dreams, sell hopes . . . That we are causing disruption in people’s lives and that we are causing disharmony, that’s something I regret.”
