Campbellā€™s Chunky Stars Dak Prescott, Saquon Barkley, Pushy Relatives

By Barry Janoff

September 5, 2019: Dak Prescott, quarterback for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, knows a team can feel like a family.

But that is nothing like your real family — especially when they mess with your press conference — as Prescott finds out in a new campaign from Campbell’s Chunky soup that features his real-life brothers, Tad and Jace Prescott.

The “Champions of Chunky” campaign also stars Saquon Barkley, running back for the New York Giants, and his mom, Tonya Johnson, in "Huddle."

In addition, Campbell Soup has signed its first partnership with Twitch, a leading live-streaming platform for gamers.

According to Campbell’s Chunky, which is the official soup sponsor for the NFL, the campaign is a “modern, updated version of the classic ‘Mama’s Boy’ campaign, which first aired in 1997 and last ran in 2014.”

The spots feature the NFL stars and their respective Champions, who interrupt them on game day — at a press conference, in the locker room, and on the sidelines — but for a good reason: “To make sure they’re filling up right with a bowl of Campbell’s Chunky soup.”

In his spot, “Question For Zak,” Prescott is at a podium during a post-game media conference.

“Zak, that touchdown . . . How did you do it?” is the first question, which comes from one of his brothers. “People say talent runs in the family.”

His other brother then asks, “Or is it because we feed you Chunky Soup?”

“Really?” says Prescott. “Who let my brothers in?”

They both jump onstage and take over the media conference as Prescott eats a bowl of Campbell’s Chunky, with the tag line, “Soup that eats like a meal.”

“We all have Champions in our lives who play a huge role in our success — whether that’s a parent, sibling, grandparent, spouse, stepparent or friend,” Gary Mazur, director-brand marketing, Campbell Soup Co., said via the brand.

“And this campaign recognizes those individuals who support us every day,” said .

Throughout the NFL season, Campbell’s Chunky will be joined in-person by Prescott, Barkley and other NFL players, along with their respective Champions, "to surprise and celebrate unsung heroes in their local communities.”

That would include firefighters, teachers, coaches or community representatives, who “will be recognized for their daily contributions to their communities and the impact they’re making on people around them.”

The integrated marketing campaign also includes Champions of Chunky local market activations, such as leveraging Campbell’s NFL team deals, in-store appearances, NFL player meet-and-greets and social media engagements.

A Chunky food truck will tour local supermarkets and stadiums on game day to offer samples of Campbell’s Chunky soup flavors.

According to Mazur, “Campbell’s Chunky is excited to bring updated, evolved versions of our iconic and humorous commercials back to life this season and celebrate not only our NFL superstars and their Champions, but the everyday heroes that play this role in the lives of those closest to them.”

Lead agency is Leo Burnett, Chicago.

Prescott is also featured in a new spot from Sleep Number, the “official sleep + wellness partner of the NFL," “Sleep Better. Play Smarter.”

The original “Mama’s Boy” campaign included such players as Richard Sherman, Clay Matthews, Victor Cruz, Donovan McNabb, LaDainian Tomlinson and Michael Strahan along with their respective moms.
