CBS Adds To NFL Coverage Not With This Show But 'That Other Pregame Show'

By Barry Janoff

August 20, 2013: In 1966, That Girl premiered on ABC.

In 1998, Fox launched That '70s Show.

In 2013, CBS Sports will unveil four more hours of programming on Sundays prior to it's NFL coverage under the title, That Other Pregame Show.

"There is room for a new show if it can differentiate itself from the others," Sean McManus, chairman for CBS Sports and executive producer for The NFL on CBS, said during a CBS-NFL media event on Tuesday. "That Other Pregame Show will be more informal, more free-wheeling than pre-game shows anyone else does, including CBS. It will be different and memorable.

The show comes at time when ESPN is expanding its NFL game-day coverage and Fox Sports 1 launched with a bevy of NFL programming, including Fox Football Daily. In addition, NFL Network has 24/7 coverage.

That Other Pregame Show will air on CBS Sports Network beginning Sept. 8 at 9 AM (ET). On CBS, The NFL Today hits the air at 1 PM (ET).

“It’s not going to be what you see on the NFL Network. It’s not going to be what you see on CBS. It’s not going to be what you see on ESPN," said McManus. "It’s going to be That Other Pregame Show. It’s going to evolve. It’s going to change.”

McManus said the show's quirky title came during planning meetings when executives would refer to the proposed effort as "That other pre-game show" to differentiate it from CBS's long-running The NFL Today. McManus said that CBS Sports creative director Pete Radovich noticed that the acronym for the show's working title spelled TOPS. So it stuck.

That Other Pregame Show will be hosed by Adam Schein from CBS Sports Network's NFL Monday Quarterback; and include just-retired 11-year NFL veteran Bart Scott; Amy Trask, former CEO for the Oakland Raiders; Brandon Tierney from CBS Radio; and CBSSports.com fantasy analyst Nathan Zegura. The show will cover college football as well as the NFL.

Members of The NFL Today will be regular contributors, said McManus, including Dan Marino, Boomer Esiason, Shannon Sharpe and Bill Cowher and host James Brown.

"In today's television landscape, there is certainly room for another pregame show if that show offers a unique approach and perspective," said McManus. "That Other Pregame Show will accomplish that, as we combine all the assets of CBS Sports including CBS Sports Radio and CBSSports.com, creating a show focusing on the fans and how they consume football."
