• FIFA has postponed plans to expand the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams for the 2022 event in Qatar. The plan is still being considered for the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. According to FIFA, “(There was not enough) time for a detailed assessment of the potential logistical impact.” The World Cup is scheduled for Nov. 21-Dec. 18, 2022.

• The NFL and NFL Players Association have unveiled two joint agreements that are intended to “support further resources directed to address pain management and behavioral health.” Full story here.

• The U.S. Women’s National Team Players Association, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, and social impact education innovator EVERFI, Inc. have oined the students of Santee Elementary School in San Jose to launch The Compassion Project for the 2019-2020 school year, described as a “national nonprofit dedicated to providing compassion education to elementary school students across the U.S.”

• The U.S. Golf Association has aligned with Marvel Entertainment to create exclusive golf education products to “engage junior golfers on the essential elements to learning the game." Scheduled to launch in June at the 2019 U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach, the collaboration features printed and digital comic books with many of Marvel’s super heroes The story follows Tony Stark (Iron Man) and other Avengers as they teach the next generation of Marvel Super Heroes about golf. Limited-edition Marvel-themed golf posters will be distributed (while supplies last) at the Junior Experience at the 2019 U.S. Open.

• Major League Lacrosse has signed a deal with Anheuser-Busch to have its Bud Light brand become the official beer partner for the 2019 MLL All-Star Game, being played in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Annapolis, MD on July 27. The deal includes “prominent signage on the playing field, fan zone activation and various on-site promotions at several sports bars and retail locations in the Greater Annapolis area leading up to the All-Star Game.”

• Stating that “we are continually seeking opportunities to evolve our product offerings,’ Kohl’s has signed an exclusive long-term alliance with Fanatics, a global leader in licensed sports merchandise with the addition of “hundreds of thousands of items.” Full story here.

• Pete Frates and Pat Quinn, co-founders of ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, have launched with The ALS Assn. the 5th anniversary of “Challenge Me” with a “new call to action to reignite the passion and generosity of the millions of people who dumped ice water on their heads in the summer of 2014.”

Luka Dončić, Trae Young Head NBA All-Rookie Team
Dallas Mavericks guard-forward Luka Dončić and Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young have been unanimously selected to the 2018-19 NBA All-Rookie First Team.

Dončić and Young both received NBA All-Rookie First Team votes on all 100 ballots to finish with 200 points each.  They are joined on the NBA All-Rookie First Team by Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton (195 points; 95 First Team votes), Memphis Grizzlies forward-center Jaren Jackson Jr. (159 points; 60 First Team votes) and Sacramento Kings forward Marvin Bagley III (156 points; 56 First Team votes).

International Champions Soccer Cup Pitching Top Teams, Venues, Marketing

April 17, 2018: The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia is scheduled for June 14-July 15.

Just five days later, what might be called "World Cup Lite" begins with 18 of the top soccer teams in the world competing in the sixth International Champions Cup presented by Heineken.

This 2018 event includes 27 matches across the U.S., Europe and Singapore.

The event is scheduled to run July 20 - Aug. 7.

The roster of clubs includes Real Madrid C.F., Manchester United F.C., FC Barcelona, Manchester City F.C., Tottenham Hotspur F.C., Liverpool F.C., Chelsea F.C., Arsenal F.C., A.S. Roma, Juventus F.C., A.C. Milan, F.C. Internazionale, Club Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla FC, Borussia Dortmund, F.C. Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain F.C.and S.L. Benfica.

In addition to presenting sponsor Heineken, 2018 International Champions Cup sponsors include MasterCard International, Ally Financial, Hertz, Konami Digital Entertainment, XYience Energy Drink, Vivid Seats.

Marketing kicks off with an intro TV spot, “Champions Meet Here,” that features a bevy of soccer stars and athletes from other sports, each touting a game or games in their city.

The full two and half minute spot includes Victor Cruz (pictured below), Draymond Green, Matt Bahr, Josh Norman, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Kawann Short, Brandon Graham, Jim Harbaugh, Paolo Maldini, Alana Blanchard (pictured below) and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

Shorter versions will run in each respective city.

The campaign will also include print, Internet, social media and local activation.

ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Deportes Radio, ESPNU and ESPNEWS will combine to cover the 2018 International Champions Cup presented by Heineken.

U.S.-based venues include Red Bull Arena and MetLife Stadium New York/New Jersey, Hard Rock Stadium Miami, Levi’s Stadium San Francisco Bay Area, Rose Bowl Los Angeles, FedEx Field Washington D.C., Soldier Field Chicago, Bank of America Stadium Charlotte, U.S. Bank Stadium Minneapolis, Heinz Field Pittsburgh, AT&T Stadium Dallas and Lincoln Financial Field Philadelphia.

Europe host cities include Vienna, Gothenburg, Madrid, Stockholm, Naples, Klagenfurt, Lecce and Warsaw.

Singapore will host three matches.

International Champions Cup presented by Heineken is conducted under the auspices of media, sports and entertainment group Relevent.

Also unveiled was the inaugural Women's International Champions Cup, which will bring three of Europe's top women's teams, including Manchester City F.C. and Paris Saint-Germain, to the U.S. and also include North Carolina Courage of the NWSL.

"Interest and fandom for European soccer in the United States and Asia is at an all-time high,” Daniel Sillman, CEO of ICC and Relevent, said in a statement.

“Record numbers of new kids from every region and community are finding a passion for the game, the mythical teams and compelling personalities. The International Champions Cup and Relevent are incredibly excited about giving fans another amazing tournament.”

According to Sillman, in addition to hosting legendary clubs in great cities and creating the European football experience, Relevant is “committed to finding new and innovative ways bring the teams, players and fans together”

He said that the introduction of the first women's tournament “was met with overwhelming response, underscoring the passion for European soccer and our mission."
