Kim Clijsters, Tennis Hall Of Famer, Planning The Mother Of All Comebacks

By Barry Janoff

September 12, 2019: Kim Clijsters, a four-time Grand Slam winner who was formerly ranked No. 1 in the world, said that she is in the process of making a comeback to the pro tennis circuit, having not played an official match since the 2012 U.S. Open.

This will be the third comeback in Clijsters’ tennis career, having first retired in 2007 due to injuries and to start a family..

Clijsters, 36, unveiled her plans today via social media, which included a video of her training and exercising.

“What do I really want from life?” said Clijsters, who was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2017 (in a class that also included Andy Roddick).

“For the past seven years I’ve been a full-time mother and love it. But I also love being a professional tennis player. Honestly, I miss that feeling. So what if tried to do both.”

A shot of her with John McEnroe has him asking, “Are you thinking of making a comeback by any chance, Kim?” as they both laugh.

“Let’s do this,” she says in the video. “Let’s come back one more time. See you in 2020.”

She has a tennis academy in her native Belgium and since 2010 has worked as a tennis commentator in the U.S. and Europe.

She was part of the ceremonies during the recent 2019 U.S. Open when she was inducted into the Court of Champions.

To be considered for the Court of Champions, players must have one U.S. Open title in singles and have been retired from singles at the U.S. Open for a minimum of five years.

Clijsters won U.S. Open singles titles in 2005, 2009 and 2010 (and was a finalist in 2003, losing to Justine Henin-Hardenne) and won the Australian Open in 2011 (and was a finalist in 2003).

She also won French Open and Wimbledon doubles in 2003 with Al Sugiyama.

Clijsters, who turned pro in 1997 and first reached No. 1 in 2003, retired in 2007 at the age of 23 due a wrist injury that required surgery and to start a family.

She returned in 2009, then retired again in 2012.

She has three children and, among her many accomplishments, in 2009 she become the first mother to win a Grand Slam title (U.S. Open) since Evonne Goolagong at Wimbledon in 1980.

Her win at the 2011 Australian Open returned her to No. 1 for a 20th career week, becoming the only mother to hold the top spot since computer rankings began in November 1975, according to the WTA..

Her singles record n 523-127, her doubles record 131-55

She was ranked No. 1 in both singles and doubles in 2003.

Clijsters was a member of the 2001 Belgian championship Fed Cup team and the Belgian Team at the 2012 London Olympics.

“Kim Clijsters ranks among the greats of the game and her return to the Tour is exciting news for the WTA family and tennis fans around the world,” Steve Simon, WTA chairman and CEO, said via the organization.

“Driven by her love for the sport, this wonderful champion continues to inspire women and men in all walks of life — and she only adds to the compelling wealth of talent in women’s tennis. I wish Kim all the best in this next chapter of her playing career.”
