Coca-Cola Extends Olympics Alliance, Signs Joint Deal With China Mengniu Dairy

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

June 24, 2019:
In what was called a first-of-its-kind Olympics pact, the International Olympic Committee said that Coca-Cola has extended its alliance with the organization, signing a joint TOP partnership agreement with China Mengniu Dairy Company Ltd.

The partnership, which begins in 2021,  brings Chinese dairy company Mengniu into the family of Worldwide TOP Partners and combines the non-alcoholic beverage and the dairy categories into a new joint category.

Financial terms of the new joint agreement, which has a 12-year term running through to the 2032 Olympic Games, were not shared.

The Financial Times put the deal itself at $1.5 billion but said the value could be as much as $3 billion with marketing, global support and other activation from Coca-Cola and Mengniu.

Coca-Cola said this extends its association with the Olympic Movement to a “historic 104-year-long relationship” as the longest continuous partner of the Olympic Games.

The Coca-Cola Co. has had a presence at the Olympic Games since the 1928 Games in Amsterdam.

Its current deal with the IOC was due to expire in 2020.

Also today, the IOC selected Italian cities Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo to co-host the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

The decision was made during the 134th session of the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland. The other candidate on the ballot was Stockholm-Åre, Sweden.

“The passion and knowledge of Italian fans, together with experienced venue operators, will create the perfect atmosphere for the best athletes in the world,” IOC president Thomas Bach said via the organization.

The IOC said the proposed 2026 Games operating budgets were "on average 20% lower than those of the candidate cities for the Olympic Winter Games 2018 (PyeongChang) and 2022 (Beijing)."

The 2026 Olympics have proposed dates of Feb. 6-22 and March 6-15 for the Paralympics.

Italy last hosted the Olympics during the 2006 Turin Winter Games.

The new joint TOP agreement with Coca-Cola and  Mengniu also includes marketing rights for the International Paralympic Committee and the Paralympic Games through the IOC-IPC long-term collaboration agreement, as well as for the Youth Olympic Games.

“This long-term agreement is another demonstration of the relevance and stability of the Olympic Games in these times of uncertainty,” said Bach.

"Having our longest-standing partner, Coca-Cola, an iconic American brand, together with a young Chinese company, Mengniu, joining hands under the roof of our Worldwide TOP Program is a great example of the unifying power of the Olympic spirit.

“This partnership will give another dimension to the promotion of the Olympic values around the world,” said Bach.

IOC top-tier global partners also include Alibaba Group, Atos, Bridgestone, Dow, GE, Intel, Omega, Panasonic, Procter & Gamble, Samsung, Toyota and Visa.

“This long-term agreement is another demonstration of the relevance and stability of the Olympic Games in these times of uncertainty."

According to James Quincey, chairman and CEO for the Coca-Cola Co., “We are honored and privileged to be a part of the Olympic Movement that makes it possible for athletes from all over the world to come together to represent their nations, pursue their dreams and be a part of history

“A lot has changed since we sold the first Coca-Cola at an Olympic event in 1928. With a fresh approach to our business and to our sponsorship, we are proud to join with Mengniu to promote and celebrate future Olympic Games.”

The IOC said that Olympic marketing programs are “based on the fundamental principle of exclusivity within a specific product category and territory.”

The current Beijing 2022 domestic partner’s exclusive rights in its designated category in the Chinese market will not be affected, according to the IOC.

Upcoming Olympics now include 2020 Tokyo Summer Games, 2022 Beijing Winter Games, 2024 Paris Summer Games, 2026 Winter Games Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo and the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
