Court Testers: Standard Life Connects Andy Murray With Luol Deng In Skills Match

By Barry Janoff

April 22, 2016: On his court, tennis player Andy Murray knows how to win Grand Slams and Olympic gold.

On his court, Luol Deng of the NBA's Miami Heat knows how to shoot three-point shots and handle a basketball.

The two athletes got together thanks to a campaign from Standard Life, "Mastering Your Dreams," a multi-platform effort that goes behind the scenes with Murray to follow his "commitment to excellence and advancing ambition in pursuit of success."

In addition to being on the sports stage, the two men have other connections: Murray is a native of the U.K., where Dang was raised after moving from Sudan (and before moving again to the U.S.); Murray is a big Heat fan and used to have season tickets to Heat games; Deng is a fan of tennis and Murray; and both were members of the 2012 Olympic team that represented Great Britain during the London Summer Games.

The meeting, which took place before the Miami Open a few weeks ago (Murray lost in the third round), is chronicled in a nearly three-minute spot in which the pair run the gamut from Dang showing Murray how to shoot long jumpers and Murray showing Dang trick shots with his tennis racquet.

They also talk about NBA star Stephen Curry, the challenges of being a sports champion and the fact that both are fans of Arsenal FC.

In related videos, Murray estimates that he runs the equivalent of a 5K race — about 6,500 steps — during five-set matches; learns to say, "No pain, no gain" in Mandarin; reveals that if he could be a super hero he would like to have the power of invisibility.

Murray has been with Standard Life since signing a three-year deal in 2014 valued at about $7 million. A dedicated Web site, WithAndy, com, explains, "When we say we’re  With Andy it means a lot more than simply supporting a world famous tennis champion. It means sharing a set of values."

Murray's endorsement deals also include Under Armour, a four-year deal also signed in 2014, valued at $23.5 million.
