Cowboys, Yankees, Real Madrid Top List Of World’s Most Valuable Sports Franchises

By Barry Janoff

July 22, 2019: The New York Knicks didn’t get the top-name free agents they wanted, but no matter: The team is the most valuable franchise in the NBA at $4 billion, up 11% from last season, and the fifth most valuable sports franchise in the world.

Although Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving went to the crosstown rival Brooklyn Nets — a franchise valued at $2.35 billion — the Knicks trail only four powerhouse teams in the world of sports value: the Dallas Cowboys ($5 billion), New York Yankees ($4.6 billion), Real Madrid ($4.24 billion) and Barcelona ($4.02 billion), according to Forbes.

The cutoff to rank among the world’s Top 50 most valuable sports teams is $2.075 billion, up $125 million from last year and $1.2 billion from five years ago.

“The values of sports teams have skyrocketed on the backs of ballooning media rights deals and more owner-friendly collective bargaining agreements that restrain player costs,” according to Forbes.

There are 52 teams across all sports worth at least $2 billion, up from one, Manchester United, in 2012, including almost every NFL team.

More than half of the Top 50 — 26 — are NFL franchises. “Credit the monster media-rights deals with the likes of CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN and DirecTV that paid out more than $260 million per team last year,” according to the new report.

The Yankees moved up three spots to No. 2,  with their value up 15% versus 2018, leading seven MLB teams that made the Top 50.

The Yankees crosstown rivals the New York Mets are listed at No. 38 ($2.3 billion).

The Knicks lead nine NBA teams in the Top 50, with the Los Angeles Lakers at No. 8 valued at $3.7 billion up 12% thanks in large part to the arrival of LeBron James.

At No. 9, the Golden State Warriors are valued at $3.5 billion, up 13%, having won three NBA titles and five consecutive Western Conference titles over the past five years.

The Warriors value should continue to rise as they move from Oakland into the new $1.4 billion, 18,000-seat Chase Center in San Francisco for the upcoming NBA season.

Likewise, the NFL’s Oakland Raiders, listed No. 42 ($2.42 billion), could see their value rise due to a move to Las Vegas for the 2020 season into a new stadium valued at about $2 billion.

The Los Angeles Rams at No. 12 ($3,2 billion) are also moving to a new $5 billion stadium in Inglewood for 2020, which should impact their overall value.

The Lakers co-Staples Center tenants, the Los Angeles Clippers, came in at No. 44 ($2.2 billion), but that could go up, depending on how the team plays this coming season with the arrival of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

At No. 3, Real Madrid leads eight soccer clubs in the Top 50, including five from the English Premier League: 6. Manchester United $3.81 billion, 25. Manchester City $2.69 billion, 32. Chelsea $2.58 billion, 42. Arsenal $2.27 billion and 45. Liverpool $2.18 billion.

No teams from the NHL, Nascar, MLS or Formula One made the Top 50.

The highest-ranking franchise outside of the NFL, NBA, MLB and European soccer was the New York Rangers at No. 72, with a value of $1.55 billion, according to Forbes.
