State Farm Adds NBA Legend Clyde ‘The Glide’ To CP3’s Houston Marketing Journey

By Barry Janoff

February 15, 2018: Chris Paul has found a new and ever-growing group of friends in his move from Los Angeles to Houston — which occurred in real life via a pre-season trade from the Clippers to the Rockets, but in Madison Avenue terms via a scenario created by State Farm.

Paul’s newest pal is Clyde “The Glide” Drexler, a member of the Houston Rockets 1994-95 NBA championship squad, gold medal winner with the “Dream Team” during the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics and a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

In a new spot from State Farm, “Game Night,” Paul plays a game of charades with his State Farm agent, Cole Perez (played by actor Oscar Nuñez) against a team of Drexler and Rockets’ All-Star guard James Harden.

“Game Night” spot will break during State Farm All-Star Saturday Night on TNT, part of the NBA’s All-Star Game festivities this weekend in Los Angeles.

Reggie Millier, former NBA star and current NBA on TNT commentator and analyst, also appears in two new stand-alone spots with Nuñez, including "Getting Older." Miller has been in previous spots for State Farm.

This past November. Paul, Harden and Drexler visited Houston schools and hosted fund-raising as part of  rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Harvey in conjunction with NBA Cares, State Farm, Chris Paul Family Foundation and Reading Is Fundamental.

In “Grand Tour,” the spot that preceded “Game Night,” we saw Paul acclimating to Houston with the help of Rockets teammates Harden and Trevor Ariza.

But it’s his new State Farm agent who gives Paul his biggest assist and really “gets him.” They finish each other’s sentences and share a love of bowling, chili fries and the Backstreet Boys’ hit song, “I Want It That Way.”

The bond continues in “Game Night,” where, as State Farm warns,” If you ever play charades against Chris Paul and his State Farm Agent Cole, good luck. These guys just get each other that good.”

Cole gives Paul the minimalist of clues, but Paul is able to rattle off the random, nonsensical answers. “Chicken fingers.” “Clyde The Glide.” “Low-cut socks,”  “Papua New Guinea.”

Drexler is flabbergasted, “That’s amazing,” he says. “I need an agent like that.”

The game takes place in Drexler’s den, which is filled with his trophies, jerseys and other memorabilia.

Nuñez as Perez offers, “I got you Glide. You worked hard for those (trophies). I’ll give them the protection they deserve.”

When it’s back to charades, Nunez makes a small move and Paul correctly guesses, “Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo.”

This time it’s Harden who is befuddled. “Battle of Waterloo?”

Text offers, “Get an agent that gets you. Here to help life go right.  State Farm.”

The campaign with Paul is scheduled to run through 2018.

Lead agency is Translation.

“Game Night” is part of a larger effort State Farm will enact during All-Star Weekend.

Among the company’s activation:

• State Farm will serve as the title partner of All-Star Saturday Night, to air on TNT, which includes  the Taco Bell Skills Challenge, JBL Three-Point Contest and Verizon Slam Dunk

• State Farm branding will be prominently placed throughout Staples Center on stanchions, pole pads, seat backs and on-court decals throughout the event
    ◦
• State Farm will use its All-Star Assist Tracker to tally the number of assists during the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night. State Farm will donate $1,800 per assist that take place during the All-Star Game (in addition to $5 per assist throughout the season, to support State Farm’s Community assist events
