Like Kobe, LeBron, KD, Curry Has A Production Company, Signs With Sony

By Barry Janoff

April 24, 2018: He has NBA titles, MVPs and three-point awards attached to his career, but will Stephen Curry win and Emmy or Oscar in the future?

Like former NBA star Kobe Bryant and current stars LeBron James and Kevin Durant, Curry now has his own production company, Unanimous Media, which he founded with partners Jeron Smith (CEO) and Erick Peyton (CCO).

The all-star guard for the Golden State Warriors is trusting his creative process, signing a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Sony called it the “biggest media deal of any athlete to date.”

According to Sony, Unanimous Media will “leverage the diversity and breadth of the studio's content platforms to develop and produce film and television projects with a focus on family, faith and sports themes.”

The deal will extend to opportunities in partnerships, electronics, gaming and virtual reality.

"Steph is a transcendent figure in current culture. His wide-ranging content creation interests overlap well with our varied businesses and we have been equally impressed with his team," Tom Rothman, chairman for Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, said in a statement.

Unanimous Media — in 2015-16, Curry won the second of his two consecutive NBA MVPs, and was the first unanimous selection in league history — will have its production headquarters on the Sony Pictures backlot, Culver City, Calif.

According to Curry, "I've been blessed to have this platform and I want to use it to affect the world positively. Partnering with Sony to share inspiring content with a global audience was a foregone conclusion."

Curry comes with his own audience: He has more than 8 million followers on Facebook, 12.5 million on Twitter, some 20 million on Instagram.

Bryan Smiley, vp-production for Columbia Pictures, who oversaw the deal, will now oversee production and development with Unanimous Media for the motion picture group.

Jeffrey Godsick, evp-brand strategy and global partnerships, will oversee partnerships and brand extension opportunities across Sony platforms.

Chris Parnell, co-president for Sony Pictures Television, will oversee TV projects with Unanimous Media in both the scripted and non-scripted space.

"Sony's broader ecosystem perfectly aligns with our mission, vision and position,” Unanimous Media’s Smith said in a statement. “The essence of who Stephen is centers around inspiration and while there's an immense opportunity here, we see this as an anomalous adaption of social entrepreneurship. It's deeper than just business.”

James knows basketball, but he also knows TV and film production via his SpringHill Entertainment company.

Last year, Curry’s teammate Durant formed entertainment company, Thirty Five Media.

Kobe Bryant launched Granity Studios before he retired from the NBA following the 2016 season, and already has won an Oscar for his Dear Basketball and among other projects has a deal with ESPN.
