Danica Joins NBC Sports For Indy 500, An Event She Calls Her 'Best, Worst Friend’

By Barry Janoff

March 20, 2019: Danica Patrick has experienced the highs and lows of the Indy 500, as well as numerous other competitions, from behind the wheel of a race car.

Now she gets to talk about the highs and lows other drivers are experiencing.

Patrick today was named as an analyst alongside host Mike Tirico for the 103rd Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Sunday, May 26, a first for the former IndyCar and Nascar driver.

It will also be a first for the NBC Sports Group, which last March acquired the exclusive rights to all NTT IndyCar Series races — including the Indianapolis 500 for the first time — qualifying and practice sessions, and Indy Lights races across its numerous platforms.

“Every time I come to Indianapolis, especially when I come to the track itself, I drive through the tunnel, I come in, I can see the pagoda, I can feel the track — I always had a deep respect for Indianapolis Motor Speedway as your best and worst friend,” said Patrick during a media conference call.

“It's like an entity to me. I've always respected that. It's the track we would go the very fastest on . . . I've been fortunate enough to have some really great races there. Really, the Indy 500 is where it all started for me as a well-known race car driver.”

Although Patrick, who retired last year after competing in the 102nd Indy 500 to end a racing career that dates back more than two decades, has had some broadcast experience, this will be a main stage national event that will put her squarely in the spotlight.

“When we got (the NTT IndyCar Series deal), the first thing we talked about — who is going to be the face of this event?” Sam Flood, executive producer and president, production, NBC Sports and NBCSN, said during the media call.

“In terms of a race car driver, someone who has crossed over the sport, is fearless in the car and in her commentary, (it’s) Danica. She has proven to be as fearless with her opinions and analysis as she was in breaking barriers while racing in the most competitive motorsports circuits in the world.”

In addition to her analyst responsibilities, Patrick will help promote the Indy 500 by appearing across numerous NBCUniversal programs and platforms in the days and weeks leading up to the race.

Patrick will also participate in NBC Sports’ coverage of Indy 500 Pole Day on May 19.

For her debut as an Indy 500 analyst, Patrick said she might temper her fearless shoot-from-the-hip opinions, but not much.

“Oh, yeah. Can't change my stripes. I think I'll have some extra insight, understand some storylines better,” she said.

“As a driver, you don't really care about the rest of them, you just want to beat them. As someone who is paying attention to the storylines going on, the drivers individually, hearing the stories and watching them unfold, there will probably be a little bit more of a sensitivity chip to all of it.

“At the same time, I won't be afraid to call out the subtleties that exist on track that perhaps the viewer or someone that hasn't been on track wouldn't know.”

This won’t be Patrick’s first time as a race analyst. While still an active driver in Nascar, Patrick gained broadcasting experience by serving as a guest analyst for Fox Sports’ coverage of Nascar Xfinity races in Michigan, Pocono and Talladega.

Since retiring, she has continued to build her various business, including working with such long-time sponsors as GoDaddy and Tissot, devloping her Somnium Wine vineyard brand, building her Warrior by Danica Patrick clothing collection, promoting her Pretty Intense book and spending time with her beau, NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“I really don't miss racing. I'm really happy. I selfishly set out the intention I wanted to travel a lot. I've definitely done that. Also working on my other businesses,” she said.

“I’m not a look-back kind of person, I'm a look-forward person. This is something that's part of looking forward. This is something totally new and different for me. It's coming at a place where I have a lot of history, but it hasn't been my job, which is why I'm going to work really hard to make sure I'm ready, like anything else I do that's different.”

And just in case there were any doubters. “No, I'm good. I mean, I watch (racing) when I can. I'm not going to lie, I'm happy doing what I'm doing. It's allowed me new opportunities like this.”

According to Flood, “Danica has a perspective unlike any other driver in the history of motorsports and will be a great addition to our first-ever coverage of the Indy 500.

“She has proven to be as fearless with her opinions and analysis as she was in breaking barriers while racing in the most competitive motorsports circuits in the world.”

“I think doing regular broadcasting would be something that I'm not sure would fit, although at my age (37) you learn to never say never because things change quickly,” said Parick. “At this point in time, it's just the Indy 500. I say 'just,' but I only mean that in one event, not that it's just this race. It is the biggest race. I'll do my preparation and be ready.

“Don't worry,” said Patrick. "I won't be afraid to give my opinion.”
