Golden Boy, DAZN Seek To Revive Passion For Monthly Boxing Appointment TV

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

March 13, 2019:
Boxing icon Oscar de La Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions have joined with DAZN to produce a monthly boxing series that will air on regional cable channels.

The first Golden Boy DAZN show is scheduled for March 21, with a two-hour block of live fights followed by a one-hour in-studio analysis and news show, including writers from Ring Magazine.

Golden Boy's in-house production division will produce the live series as a Golden Boy DAZN presentation.

"This Golden Boy DAZN series reinforces our commitment to making fighting entertainment more accessible and affordable to the masses," said Oscar De La Hoya, chairman and CEO for Golden Boy.

"We're proud to deliver boxing fans great live fights along with the new Ring Report, a weekly studio show covering the world of boxing with an innovative social media twist and content from top boxing bloggers in the business."

Golden Boy said it would “work closely with its U.S. and international affiliates, supplying them with customized promos and marketing materials to drive fans to tune-in to the series.”

According to Golden Boy and DAZN, “Fight fans have yearned for a consistent night and time for boxing, left by the void caused by the loss of USA's Tuesday Night Fights, which ran for 16 years; and ESPN's Friday Night Fights, which ran for an additional 17 years before being canceled in 2015.”

HBO also ceased its long-running live boxing platform earlier this year.

“A consistent night and time for pugilistic action was part of the boxing culture for over 30 years, and Golden Boy is proud to bring it back and grow a new fan base around this series,” according to de La Hoya’s company.

Golden Boy DAZN said events would “introduce and familiarize fans with the world champions and stars of the next generation, who will then graduate to the kind of high-caliber DAZN events that currently feature the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez, Anthony Joshua, Jaime Munguia and many others.”

The series debut onn March 21 will take place in Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles.

The monthly live fights and studio show will air from 10 PM-1 AM (ET) on regional cable channels throughout the U.S., as well as across the globe on international TV stations and networks.

Details on the Golden Boy DAZN affiliates were not yet released.

The 2019 live boxing series is scheduled to air monthly on March 21, April 25, May 16, June 13, July 18, Aug. 22, Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 14 and Dec. 5.
