First Post-Super Bowl Endorsement Deal Goes To Disney, MVP Malcolm Smith

By Barry Janoff

February 3, 2014: Malcolm Smith. linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks, signed the first post-Super Bowl XLVIII endorsement deal, when he declared moments after the Seahawks dismantled the Denver Broncos, 43-8, "I'm going to Disney World."

Smith, who was named MVP of the game, appears in the 47th in a series of "What's Next" ads that date back to Super Bowl XXI in 1987.

Smith made his proclamation even as Seahawks' colored blue-and-green confetti reined down on the field at MetLife Stadium.

As action from the Super Bowl is played out, including Smith's interception of Denver quarterback Peyton Manning and the subsequent 69-yard return for a touchdown and a shot of Smith holding the MVP trophy, we hear the song "When You WIsh Upon a Star" as a voiceover says, "Malcolm Smith: You and the Seattle Seahawks just won the Super Bowl. What are you going to do next?"

"I'm going to Disney World!!!" exclaims Smith.

He followed up the commercial with this shout-out today on his Twitter account: "I'm going to Disney World!! No, literally, I am. #StillinShock."

Smith got to make his statement a reality as the focus of a parade down Main Street in Disney World on Monday, the day after the game. (See the parade here.)

Smith also recovered a fumble and had nine tackles.

Smith joins an all-star lineup of NFL players and coaches who have celebrated Super Bowl wins in "What's Next" commercials. Disney said he is the first NFL defensive player to appear in the campaign.

The first "What's Next" spot featured New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms. Washington Redskins quarterback Doug Williams said it the next year after being named MVP of Super Bowl XXII. Others include Joe Montana, John Elway and Tom Brady. Prior to Smith, the past four have been Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning and Joe Flacco, all quarterbacks.

Separately, Coca-Cola, the official soft drink of the Seahawks, said it would release a limited-edition Coke Zero cans at retail in the Seattle area to honor the team's Super Bowl win.
