Disney Teams With Cal Ripken Jr. For Youth Baseball At ESPN Wide World Of Sports

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

August 20, 2019:
The Walt Disney Co. has unveiled plans to develop the Ripken Experience at Walt Disney World Resort that will, beginning in 2020, host “top-level youth baseball tournaments” for ages 6-18 in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

According to Disney, “The Ripken Experience at Walt Disney World Resort will encompass 11 ballfields: six youth-sized baseball fields equipped with lights for night games and five professional-sized fields."

The complex also includes The Stadium at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, which has hosted MLB Spring Training games (Atlanta Braves) for more than two decades.

"At Disney Sports, we create the best possible experience for all of the athletes who walk through our gates," Faron Kelley, vp-Disney Sports, said via Disney.

"Working with baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr., and his outstanding youth baseball academy, we will be taking the baseball experience at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex to a new level of excellence.”

According to Disney, leagues and teams that play in the tournaments will have the opportunity for a week-long experience that includes: a six-game guarantee with a nine-game maximum; opening ceremonies and skills competitions; PA announcements and walk-up music; a MLB Tournament ambassador; player and coach gifts; and Ripken Experience rings. (Details here.)

The Ripken Experience at Walt Disney World Resort will join Ripken Baseball's lineup of youth sports destinations, including the Ripken family's hometown of Aberdeen, Md.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Across its facilities and national clinic tours, Ripken Baseball said last year it hosted more than 70,000 ball players from 42 states and eight countries.

According to Ripken Jr., “One of the core pillars of Ripken Baseball is to remember to have fun, so what better place to compete and maximize the family sports travel experience than right here at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort.

“We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic and internationally-respected brand as Walt Disney World to provide teams and their families with the most memorable experiences."

Ripken Jr., nicknamed "The Iron Man" for setting the MLB record for most consecutive games played (2,632), played 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 19-time All-Star shortstop and two-time American League MVP (1983, 1991) was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.
