$5B Franchises: Knicks, Warriors, Lakers Lead NBA’s Most Valuable Teams

October 18, 2021: The NBA intends to reach many milestones during its 75th Anniversary Season, and this may be among its most accomplished: For the first time in league history, three franchises are worth more than $5 billion.

They would be the New York Knicks ($5.8 billion), Golden State Warriors ($5.6 billion) and Los Angeles Lakers ($5.5 billion), according to a new report from Forbes.

Four other franchises top the $3 billion mark: the Chicago Bulls ($3.7 billion), Boston Celtics ($3.6 billion), Los Angeles Clippers ($3.3 billion) and Brooklyn Nets ($3.2 billion).

The Top Ten also includes the Houston Rockets ($2.8 billion), Dallas Mavericks ($2.7 billion and Toronto Raptors ($2.5 billion).

The defending NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks come in at No. 17 ($1.9 billion).

Forbes said that, on average, “NBA team values are up 13% (since its previous list in February), due in large part to "record sponsorship revenue and high expectations for the league's next media rights deal."

This past season, the NBA and its 30 teams reached an estimated record $1.46 billion in sponsorship deals, according to sponsorship, marketing and consulting firm IEG, Chicago.

The NBA has added to or expanded upon its partnership roster for its 75th Anniversary Season via such alliances as LegalZoom, Google Pixel, Kia, Coinbase and Wilson (returning as the NBA’s official game ball).

Among other activation this season, the NBA has unveiled multi-media 75th anniversary marketing, plans marquee events during the NBA All-Star 2022 in Cleveland and will name the 75 Top Players In NBA history.

“The 2021-22 season will be truly special as we celebrate 75 years of NBA basketball,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said via the league.
