Crocodile Rock: Djokovic Switches Style From Uniqlo To Lacoste For French Open

By Barry Janoff

May 22, 2017: To coincide with the French Open, Novak Djokovic is not only switching coaches but his style, as well.

Djokovic, who has signed tennis icon Andre Agassi as his new coach, will hit the courts at Roland Garros beginning next week wearing Lacoste, switching from long-time fashion partner Uniqlo.

Financial terms were not released.

According to Lacoste, "René Lacoste and Novak Djokovic. Two legends who share the same values of Fair-Play, tenacity and elegance."

According to Djokovic, "I am proud to be the new crocodile," a reference to the brand’s logo.

Djokovic, currently ranked No. 2 in the world behind Andy Murray, also has deals that include adidas, Seiko, Jacob’s Creek, Head, ANZ and Unicef.

He enters the French Open as the defending men’s champion, seeking his 13th career Grand Slam win.

A multi-media campaign will support the new alliance, including TV, print, Internet, social media and on-site activation.

Djokovic will wear Lacoste on-court for the first time at Roland Garros.

An anchor TV spot, "Le Nouveau Crocodile: Novak Djokovic," appears to show René LaCoste — who during his tennis career won seven Grand Slam titles and for a time was ranked No. 1 in the world — in 1933 and Djokovic in 2017 playing tennis against each other. In voiceover, Djokovic offers, "1933. René Lacoste creates the first polo. A revolution . . . I’m proud to be the new crocodile."

Print comes with the tag line, "Life is a beautiful sport. Since 1933."

Lacoste said it has developed for Djokovic an "eponymous clothing line to be worn on the court. These outfits have been specially designed to kit out the champion during the Grand Slam tournaments as well as dress him for other tournaments throughout the season.

"The Novak Djokovic collection is a line of performance products that fuse functionality with style. This wardrobe, perfect for the players who, like Novak Djokovic, pay attention to all the details of a game, will be available in Lacoste boutiques" starting May 2017.

According to Lacoste, for its new advertising campaign, the brand "imagined a changeover between the two champions, René Lacoste and Novak Djokovic.

The TV spot "bears witness to the brand's defining moment: the invention of the LaCoste L.12.12 Polo shirt — the day upon which René Lacoste decided to break away from contemporary tennis dress codes by cutting off the sleeves of his shirt, in order to allow himself greater freedom of movement."
