April 30, 2021: Recently retired NFL quarterback Drew Brees did not stay retired for long.
Brees, who works as an analyst for NBC Sports, has now signed on to become “general manager” for DIY retail chain Lowe’s Home Team.
Brees’ first moves: Signing Justin Fields (QB Ohio State), who was drafted No. 11 in the first round by the Chicago Bears; and Najee Harris (RB Alabama), who was drafted No. 24 overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Brees, Fields, Harris, and nine other Home Team players (to be named) will partner with hundreds of Lowe’s associates and non-profits to make homes better for all by coming together to give back to communities around the country.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve as the general manager for Lowe’s 2021 Home Team,” Brees said via Lowe’s, which signed on in 2019 the NFL’s official partner in the home improvement retail category.
“My goal is to help lead and inspire current and former players — like Justin and Najee — to get in the game with me and Lowe’s to bring attention to local communities that may need our help in projects where we can make a real difference.”
Brees and Fields shared an intro spot on NFL Draft night, with Bree;s saying that, as GM, The Lowe’s Home Team selects . . . Justin Fields.”
“Mr. Brees, I’m just so humbled to be chosen,” Fields says.
“You know, everyone knows what I can do on the field, but nobody’s seen what I can do off the field just yet . . . Now that I have the Lowe’s Home Team backing me, I got to start with the folks back in my home state of Georgia. So, I’m excited.”
Fields also has deals that include Bose and Progressive Insurance.
Fields and Harris are part of a new Progressive campaign, “Up All Night with Nate Burleson,” in which the former NFL WR now NFL Network analyst interviews players wearing pajamas and lounging in bed.
In a follow-up Lowe’s spot, "Justin Fields Makes A Call To His Hometown," Fields has a surprise Skype conversation with Lonzo Caffey, the front end supervisor for Lowe’s in Acworth, GA, — about five miles northwest Field’s hometown of Kennesaw — who works with youth, sports teams, domestic abuse victims, cancer patients and other local people to help improve their lives.
In its inaugural season, Lowe’s said its 2020 Home Team supported rebuilding and community-focused projects in all 32 NFL markets.
In partnership with non-profits across the country, more than 70 Lowe’s stores participated donating more than 4,000 volunteer hours, joined with Rebuilding Together to take on critical home repairs in Tampa; worked with thousands of active military and veterans; and donated more than one million Christmas trees to families nationwide.
