Dubai Duty Free Extends, Expands With WTA, Adds Halep, Svitolina To Marketing

June 5, 2018: Dubai Duty Free, which has been a WTA partner since 2004, has extended and expanded its alliance with the women’s tennis organization.

In addition, Dubai Duty Free said it has signed world No.1 ranked Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina, currently ranked No. 4, as spokespersons, joining Caroline Wozniacki in that capacity.

The global airport retailer said the core elements of the partnership are designed to “align Dubai Duty Free with WTA's premium assets, allowing (it) to increase its reach through a newly expanded ambassador program, new high-profile event experiences and custom headlining exposure for its most prestigious events.”

Financial terms of the new deal were not released.

“The WTA is tremendously proud of our longstanding relationship with Dubai Duty Free,” Steve Simon, WTA CEO and chairman, said in a statement. “Dubai Duty Free is an avid supporter of women’s tennis and we look forward to continue growing the sport even more in this next chapter of our partnership.”

Other WTA global partners include Porsche, SAP, USANA and IQIYI online video platform.

Prominent in its WTA and tennis presence is Dubai Duty Free as owner, organizer and title sponsor for the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, an equal-prize money premier tournament played in Dubai, UAE, in the Aviation Club Tennis Centre

Past winners of the tournament include all three Dubai Duty Free ambassadors: Svitolina (2017, 2018, pictured) Halep (2015) and Wozniacki (2011).

The agreement continues Dubai Duty Free’s sponsorship of the WTA year-end World No.1 singles and doubles awards, most recently presented to Halep for singles and the former doubles team of Martina Hingis and Latisha Chan at the 2017 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.

Among activation under the new deal, Dubai Duty Free will host a special "Women That Achieve Power Lunch," which will bring together tennis’ most influential women, media and WTA partners.

It will be held as part of WTA’s just unveiled “WTA Tennis on the Thames” event (June 28), just prior to Wimbledon 2018 (July 2-15) in the Bernie Spain Gardens at London’s Oxo Tower.

It is described as “a public celebration of women who are shaping the world through their pioneering spirit and achievements both on and off the court.”

“For the past 45 years the WTA has been at the forefront of change in women’s sport,” Micky Lawler, WTA president, said in a statement. “From Billie Jean King fighting for gender equality to Serena Williams ushering in a new era of power and athleticism, the WTA has left an undeniable impression.

“The Tennis on the Thames event is a celebration of the WTA, our players and their personal accomplishments that have sparked positive change in the lives of one or thousands of individuals, both on and off the court,” said Lawler.

“There are some new innovations planned for this year and we are looking forward to working with the WTA on making these effective for our brand.”

According to Colm McLoughlin, executive vice chairman and CEO for Dubai Duty Free, “We are delighted to extend our partnership with the WTA and look forward to working with the three ambassadors, Caroline, Simona and Elina, all of whom we know very well through our Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

“There are some new innovations planned for this year, not least the new and exciting activation in London, and we are looking forward to working with the WTA on making these effective for our brand.”

“It’s an honor to represent Dubai Duty Free as a brand ambassador,” Halep said in a statement. “I have many memories at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, especially winning the title in 2015, but also all of the experiences I have been part of due to Dubai Duty Free’s love for women’s tennis.”
