Mantle, Rivera, Ruth Among First Inductees Into eBay Baseball Card Hall Of Fame

By Barry Janoff

June 13, 2019: This July, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, will induct several new members, including Roy Halladay, Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina and Mariano Rivera.

Rivera, who was a mainstay out of the New York Yankees bullpen for 17 seasons, has already been inducted into a Hall of Fame —  the eBay Baseball Card Hall of Fame.

Rivera is one of ten MLB icons named to the inaugural class organized by the online marketing destination, which said the eBay Baseball Card Hall of Fame features players “whose trading cards have held the highest value and had the greatest influence on baseball's cards and collectibles world.”

The inaugural class of inductees also includes (in alphabetical order): Ken Griffey Jr., Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial, Cal Ripken Jr., Pete Rose, Babe Ruth, Nolan Ryan, Ozzie Smith and Ted Williams.

In addition to the inductees, eBay identified five "hopefuls" whose baseball cards, and performance on and off the field, rival that of the inaugural class: Derek Jeter, Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper and Albert Pujols.

"Baseball card collecting is viewed by many as America's second-favorite pastime, and every fan remembers the thrill of finding the most sought-after cards of their day,”  Sam Bright, vp-merchandising for eBay North America, said via the company.

“We created the Baseball Card Hall of Fame to recognize those who have shaped the collecting experience across their respective generation. These players' cards have become an iconic part of baseball culture, prized by collectors around the world for their history and value."

Among the distinctions for the inaugural eBay Baseball Card Hall of Fame class:

• Mickey Mantle is the “record holder for most expensive card ever sold on eBay, a covetable cardboard keepsake 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, (which) went for an impressive $486,100. Mantle has the most cards represented in the marketplace’s 25 most expensive baseball trading cards ever sold.”

• Babe Ruth’s 1916 rookie card is “not only one of eBay’s most vintage cards, but it also clocks in as one of the most expensive baseball trading cards sold on eBay for an impressive $80,900.”

• The 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card “is one of the most iconic cards of all time. eBay’s most popular year-over-year player has sustained incredible and consistent growth on the marketplace.”

According to eBay, Griffey Jr.’s Hall of Fame induction in 2016 “majorly boosted trading card sales 32% from the year prior, and despite retiring almost ten years ago, his trading card search rate online saw a 42% increase last year.”

• Following the announcement of his Baseball Hall of Fame induction earlier this year, Mariano Rivera trading card searches on eBay “are on pace to double those from the previous year. His cards continue to sell at the steady pace of more than 300 per month.”

• Three of Pete Rose’s 1963 rookie cards “made it onto eBay’s top 25 most expensive baseball cards, having sold for $150,000, $86,100 and $82,601.”

• In recent years people have bought “60 Nolan Ryan cards per day” on eBay.

• “Almost 20 years after his retirement, Cal Ripken Jr.’s cards are still steadily selling an average of 50 per day.”

In conjunction with Rivera's induction into eBay's Hall of Fame — as well as his achievement to become first player in history to be unanimously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers' Association of America — eBay said that people can shop the "eBay x Mariano Rivera" collection of exclusive signed merchandise and one-of-a-kind memorabilia.

According to Rivera, ”I love that eBay started the Baseball Card Hall of Fame. As a player, you have fans who come out to the games and they're incredible, then you have collectors who bring the game home with their distinct passion.

”The exclusive merchandise we've put together with eBay is for real fans, whether they're Yankee die-hards or just genuine collectors. Most importantly, this collection creates incredible resources for underprivileged youth and their families."
