May 22, 2018: The NFL and CBS have signed a deal that will see Super Bowl LIII on ESPN Deportes as the exclusive Spanish-language broadcast in the U.S.
This is the second Super Bowl telecast for ESPN Deportes following Super Bowl 50 in 2016, which also was the first Super Bowl to air on an ESPN network in the U.S.
Financial terms of the deal were not released.
Super Bowl LIII on CBS is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019 (6 PM ET) in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
“The NFL’s Hispanic fan base is fast-growing and passionate,” Amanda Herald, vp-media strategy & business development for the NFL, said in a statement. “We’re excited to have ESPN Deportes on board again to televise the league’s biggest event and deliver the game to millions of Spanish-speaking fans.”
“As the broadcaster of Super Bowl LIII, it was important for us to find a Spanish-language partner to reach the NFL’s Hispanic fan base on the biggest day in television,” Dan Weinberg, evp-programming for CBS Sports, said in a statement. “The presentation on ESPN will be a great complement to our broadcast on CBS.”
The network also presents weekly Monday Night Football games in Spanish throughout the NFL regular season, a wild card playoff game and studio shows NFL Live and NFL Esta Noche.
According to Freddy Rolón, vp and GM for ESPN Deportes, “The Super Bowl is one of the biggest and most anticipated sporting events of the year and we are proud to serve as the Spanish-language media partner thanks to this agreement with the NFL and CBS.
“Carrying Super Bowl LIII will be the perfect way for us to cap the NFL season, which will also include our presentation of the Mexico City MNF game and our plans to provide an ESPN2 MNF Spanish-language simulcast during the first nine weeks of the season.”
ESPN Deportes said its Monday Night Football commentator team of Álvaro Martín (play-by-play), former NFL kicker and Super Bowl champion Raul Allegre (analyst) and sideline reporter John Sutcliffe would call the game from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
To complement the live Super Bowl telecast, ESPN Deportes will present coverage throughout the week from Atlanta.
This will be the first Super Bowl played in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which opened in 2017 as home to the NFL's Falcons.
Atlanta has previously hosted two Super Bowls, both in the Georgia Dome: Super Bowl XXVIII (1994) and Super Bowl XXXIV (2000).
