ESPN, Disney Sign Deal For Exclusive Live Coverage Of eSports Overwatch League

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

July 11, 2018: ESPN and parent company Walt Disney have signed an exclusive multi-year deal for live TV coverage of Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch League, the global city-based eSports competition now in its first season.

Financial terms of the deal were not shared.

Coverage begins today (July 11) with Overwatch League playoff competition across ESPN and Disney XD.

The 2017–2018 Overwatch League inaugural season concludes with the Grand Finals live from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, on ESPN and Disney XD (July 27–28).

The Grand Finals prize pool is $1.4 million.

All coverage will also be available for ESPN and Disney network subscribers to live-stream on the ESPN+ App and DisneyNOW.

The Overwatch League Finals will encompass ten total hours of airtime over four outlets.

The alliance with ESPN and Disney significantly increases the reach of Overwatch League, which this past January signed a two-year pact with social video service Twitch to present live every match of Overwatch League’s inaugural seasons.

The Overwatch League is also available via MLG.com.

“The Overwatch League Grand Finals is by far our most comprehensive television distribution for an eSports event over a single weekend, “Justin Connolly, evp-affiliate sales and marketing for Disney and ESPN Media Networks, said in a statement.

“This overall collaboration with Disney/ABC, ESPN and Blizzard represents our continued commitment to eSports, and we look forward to providing marquee Overwatch League coverage across our television platforms for fans.”

Overwatch investors include Boston Uprising’s Robert Kraft, majority owner for the New England Patriots; Los Angeles Gladiators’ Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets); Philadelphia Fusion’s Comcast Spectator; New York Excelsior’s Jeff Wilpon, COO for the New York Mets; and San Francisco Shock’s NBA Sacramento Kings’s co-owner Andy Miller.

According to Pete Vlastelica, president and CEO for Activision Blizzard eSports Leagues, “We’re excited to be working with ESPN and DisneyXD to bring Overwatch eSports to an even wider audience.

“We’ve seen incredible passion and support from fans during the inaugural season of the Overwatch League, and we’re looking forward to capping it off for them with an epic Grand Finals at Barclays Center later this month.”

“The Blizzard team has created a genre-leading eSport and a premium professional franchise system in the Overwatch League,” Marc Buhaj, svp-programming and GM for Disney XD. “Together with our telecast partners at ESPN, we look forward to growing a legion of new Overwatch fans across the next two years.”
