ESPN Joins 'Assassin's Creed' Publisher For Invasion Of Casual-Gaming Category

Special to NYSportsJournalism

September 13, 2012: ESPN, the self-proclaimed "worldwide leader in sports," is now seeking to become a worldwide leader in casual sports videogames.

ESPN has unveiled an alliance with Ubisoft, which publishes such titles as  Assassin's Creed and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, "to develop unique content for ESPN Sports Connection."

ESPN said the deal is the network's first console game targeting the casual gaming market. Financial details were not disclosed.

ESPN Sports Connection will be available in North America exclusively for the Nintendo Wii U this holiday season. Featured sports will include soccer, football, baseball, tennis, golf and go-karting. In addition to single player challenges, the game also features co-op and multi-player modes and supports up to five players using the GamePad, according to Ubisoft.

In order to add depth unavailable to the likes of 2K (NBA 2K13) and EA Sports (Madden NFL 13), Ubisoft will be able to mine an array of exclusive ESPN content.

Among other attributes, players will be able to customize their own avatars with ESPN-branded gear and access ESPN broadcast graphics, logos, banners and music.

ESPN said material would be made available from ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN Classic, SportsCenter, SportsNation, ESPNFC and elsewhere.

The release is expected to come with marketing support, including print, digital and social media.
