Don’t Call It A Comeback: Boxing Ranks High On ESPN Programming Plans

By Barry Janoff

August 2, 2018: Calling it the “most comprehensive, exclusive rights agreement in the history of boxing,” ESPN and premier boxing promotional group Top Rank have signed a seven-year deal for exclusive events,
programming, classic fights, studio content, weigh-ins, post-fight interviews and press conferences.

Financial terms for the seven-year deal, which runs from 2018-2025, were not shared.

Both sides said the new agreement was the result of the “huge success of the first year of Top Rank on ESPN.”

“ESPN is thrilled with this new long-term agreement with Top Rank, which represents the most innovative and comprehensive relationship in the world of boxing today,” Jimmy Pitaro, ESPN president and co-chairman, Disney Media Networks, said in a statement.

“By creating and distributing significantly more Top Rank events and boxing content, ESPN and Top Rank will jointly cultivate upcoming fighters and fights, creating the stars of tomorrow while providing fans with the sport’s best content in a more personalized manner.”

The deal comes as boxing in the U.S. is enjoying a business and media resurgence.

In May, Perform Group signed former ESPN president John Skipper as its executive chairman and then signed  an eight-year, $1 billion pact with Matchroom Boxing with the intent to “re-ignite the sport of boxing in the U.S. for fans.”

The two sides called it  “the biggest-ever deal in boxing.”

The nucleus of the pact will see Matchroom Boxing USA promote 16 fights a year with boxing’s “biggest stars at the best venues across America.”

DAZN, Perform Group’s live and on-demand streaming service, will be the exclusive U.S. broadcast partner for the 16 U.S. fights, in addition to Matchroom’s existing 16 fight nights in the U.K.

Leading Matchroom Boxing’s roster is British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua (21-0, 20 KOs), who won the gold medal in the super-heavyweight division at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and currently holds the heavyweight titles for the IBF, WBA, IBO and WBO.

Initial marketing support is labeling the platform, “The Future of Boxing.”

Early this year Floyd Mayweather Jr. opened the first Mayweather Boxing + Fitness (in Los Angeles), with plans to open locations worldwide, with a focus on neighborhoods in which people generally do not have access to such workout and exercise venues.

Top Rank on ESPN content will air on ESPN linear networks or stream on ESPN+.

“Our collective ability to integrate live events, classic fights, studio shows, and behind-the-scenes features will raise the long-term profile of the sport of boxing."

The exclusive live event breakdown per year includes 18 events on ESPN, 12 exclusive prime time events on ESPN+, 24 premium international events on ESPN+ and undercard coverage of all 54 events on ESPN+.

Subscribers to ESPN+ will also have access to a variety of new and existing boxing content throughout the year,

Boxing news, information, and opinion will also appear across ESPN platforms, with new programs to be developed and revealed. at a later date.

According to Todd duBoef, Top Rank president, “This partnership will continue to bring the biggest events and best fighters from around the world to ESPN networks.

“Our collective ability to integrate live events, classic fights, studio shows, and behind-the-scenes features will raise the long-term profile of the sport of boxing and the athletes.”
