ESPN Xs Out International Summer, Winter X Games To Focus On U.S. Properties

By Barry Janoff

October 3, 2013: In 2011, ESPN unveiled a global plan for its action sports X Games property, which would take the Summer and Winter events beyond the U.S. to such locations as Tignes, France; Foz do Iguacu, Brazil; Munich and Barcelona.

After one year of action in 2013, ESPN said it would cut those locations from its plans to focus on the domestic properties. ESPN cited finances as the major reason for the move.

"We are proud to have run world-class competitions for both the athletes and spectators," ESPN said in a statement. "However, the overall economics of these events do not provide a sustainable future path."

ESPN said that the domestic events for 2014 would "be held as scheduled." The Winter X Games will take place Jan. 23-26 in Aspen, Colo.; and the Summer X Games May 15-18 in first-time locale Austin, Texas.

The global expansion included new competitive events as well as increased emphasis on music, art and other cultural aspects. Many of these additions are expected to be incorporated into the domestic Summer and Winter X Games.

"We are proud to have run world-class competitions for both the athletes and spectators. But the overall economics do not provide a sustainable future path."

The Summer X Games began in 1995 in Newport, RI, where it stayed for two years, before two-year stints in San Diego, San Francisco and Philadelphia. For the next 11 years, the Summer X Games were staged in Los Angeles.

According to ESPN, "The company remains fully committed to the X Games brand and its full-scale competitions in Aspen, Colorado and Austin, Texas – its newest host city – and we will continue to distribute these premier events around the world."
