Arlington, Home To NFL Cowboys, MLB Rangers, Plans $10M eSports Venue

By Barry Janoff

March 14, 2018: Arlington, Texas, located about 20 miles west of Dallas, has a population of almost 393,000 — the seventh largest city in the state — and is home to AT&T Stadium, which is home for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys; Globe Life Park, home for MLB’s Texas Rangers; and the University of Texas at Arlington.

It also is home for the Arlington Convention Center, but not for long.

Leaders from the City of Arlington on Wednesday unveiled a $10 million plan to convert the Convention Center into the Esports Stadium Arlington, described as “a state-of-the-art eSports venue designed to draw competitive players and fans from around the world.”

eSports Stadium Arlington, scheduled to open this Fall, will cover 100,000 square feet — making it what organizers call “the largest and most flexible eSports stadium in the country” — with space for up to 1,000 spectators; event, gaming, retail and social spaces; VIP hospitality, a broadcast studio and team training areas.

The venue is being planned with Esports Venues, LLC and sports and entertainment architecture firm Populous.

“Being on the forefront of new ideas and setting trends is in our DNA and part of who we are as The American Dream City,” Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams said during a media conference in the Convention Center on Wednesday (March 14).

“Esports Stadium Arlington will further cement our city’s status as a national and international tourist destination. Players and fans will come here for the tournaments and they’ll stay even longer to experience everything Arlington has to offer,” said Williams.

Arlington is used to staging big events. AT&T Stadium hosted Super Bowl XLV in 2010, the NCAA Div. I Men’s Final Four in 2014 and WWE’s WrestleMania 32 in 2016.

The NFL’s 2018 Draft is scheduled for AT&T Stadium April 26-28, along with the accompanying NFL Experience.

The move by leaders in Arlington comes as more cities are recognizing the financial, logistical and tourism power of eSports.

This month, ESports Arena Las Vegas is opening in the Luxor Hotel (in a space that had been the LAX Nightclub), to be followed by an ESports Arena location in Oakland (scheduled to open in April) with a third  already operating in Santa Ana, Calif. (south of Los Angeles).

Activision-Blizzard this past October opened the Blizzard Arena Los Angeles in Burbank, a 50,000 square-foot venue specifically for eSports competitions.

Venues from various enterprises are being proposed for cities including New York, Boston, San Francisco and Washington DC.

Driving the eSports category: In 2017, the eSports market worldwide was valued at nearly $500 million, and by 2020 it is estimated to be a $1.5 billion business, according to eSports research consulting and marketing firm NewZoo, San Francisco.

Among the non-endemic companies involved with eSports include adidas, Arby’s, Audi, Axe, Bud Light, Buffalo Wild Wings, Coca-Cola, Ford, Geico, Gillette, Hyundai, Mobil, Mountain Dew, Nike, Nissan, Reese’s, Slim Jim, and Visa.

Among others, the NBA and NHL are launching their own eSports leagues, joining a roster that includes Call of Duty World and Overwatch Leagues (Activision), League of Legends (Riot Games), FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIFA and EA Sports), Madden NFL (EA Sports) and E-League (Turner Sports and Endeavor).

According to organizers, Arlington’s proposed agreement with Esports Venues includes an initial ten-year lease with a ten-year renewal option.

“Arlington’s renovation and equipment investments would be repaid through annual lease payments, event revenue, stadium naming rights revenue and other opportunities associated with catering to the eSports industry,” according to the companies.

“Arlington’s ability to adapt to an emerging sports entertainment market and readiness to make strategic investments to attract the eSports tournaments and other high-tech entertainment events reflects the city’s drive to remain a thriving tourism destination,” Ron Price, Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau president and CEO, said during the media conference.

“We are creating the most unique and technologically advanced space available for meetings and conventions in North Texas. The production capabilities and technological innovations being introduced to the current facility are like nothing the market has seen before. Arlington’s ability to deliver an elevated customer experience can only serve to expand the meeting and convention market for the city,” said Price.
