Ex-Brooklyn Nets Exec Brett Yormark Joins Jay-Z As Co-CEO Roc Nation United

By Barry Janoff

October 3, 2019: Roc Nation, the multi-media platform company under the auspices of Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter that just signed a major alliance with the NFL, has tapped into the NBA for a big hire.

Brett Yorkmark, former CEO for the Brooklyn Nets and their home venue, Barclays Center, has been named co-CEO of Roc Nation Unified and president of business operations and strategy.

Yormark’s brother, Michael, who has been president and chief of branding and strategy for Roc Nation since 2014, was also named co-CEO of Roc Nation Unified.

Michael Yormark was previously CEO and president for the NHL’s Florida Panthers

Mike Zavodsky, the former CRO of BSE (Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment) Global, which owns the Nets and Barclays Center under Joseph Tsai, joined Roc Nation Unified as U.S .president of sports and event sales in August.

Financial terms of Brett Yormark’s deal were not shared.

"Throughout his career, Brett Yormark has proven himself to be a leading executive across the sports and entertainment landscape," Jay Brown, Roc Nation CEO and co-founder, said via the company.

"During his time with BSE Global, Roc Nation and Brett collaborated on groundbreaking projects and partnerships, and we look forward to continuing to build on that success."

Brett Yormark left the Nets last month after Tsai acquired full ownership of the team and Barclays Arena.

He was a key player in the franchise moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn in 2012 and then building the team into a global brand.

His role was filled by David Levy, who moved over after 32 years at Turner Broadcasting, the last six as president.

Jay-Z previously was a minority owner (about 5% per industry analysts) of the Nets.

According to Yormark, "I am proud to be joining Jay-Z, Desiree Perez (Roc Nation COO) and the board of Roc Nation to grow the business and the brand. What they have accomplished in a short period of time is remarkable.

"I am equally excited to be partnering with my brother Michael as co-CEOs of Roc Nation Unified. Together we will extend the company's domestic and global influence while helping to utilize Roc Nation's considerable resources to the benefit of its clients and partners."

Roc Nation Unified is the newly branded, full-service agency that will support artists, athletes, events, venues, leagues, teams, and brands.

According to the company, “Roc Nation Unified will formally bring together and expand upon the company's current existing infrastructure to offer clients a full scale of services — marketing, branding, sponsorship, philanthropic and communications strategies.”

Roc Nation just signed a multi-year deal with NFL and was instrumental in signing Jennifer Lopez and Shakira as featured performers for the Super Bowl LIV Pepsi Halftime Show this February.

In August, when the NFL-Roc Nation alliance was unveiled, Jay-Z said that, with its global reach, the NFL “has the platform and opportunity to inspire change across the country.

“Roc Nation has shown that entertainment and enacting change are not mutually exclusive ideas — instead, we unify them. This partnership is an opportunity to strengthen the fabric of communities across America."
