FIFA Extends Broadcast Alliance With Fox For Soccer World Cup Coverage

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

February 12, 2015: Fox has yet to broadcast a soccer World Cup under its new deal, but FIFA, the sport's governing body, must like what lies ahead.

FIFA said today (Feb. 12) that it has extended Fox's U.S. English broadcast rights from 2018 and 2022 through the 2026 event.

FIFA also has given the same extensions to NBCUniversal's Telemundo (Spanish language) in the U.S. and CTV/TSN in Canada exclusive broadcast rights to FIFA competitions during this period.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fox Sports in 2011 won the rights to air the FIFA 2018 and 2022 World Cups, which are scheduled to take place in Russia and Qatar, respectively. Industry analysts put that deal at $425 million.

The site for the 2026 Word Cup has not yet been decided. The U.S. is among the nation's said to be considering a bid.

ESPN previously held the U.S. English broadcast rights.

"We will be able to further promote football in North America and build on the impressive interest shown by audiences. . . during the 2014 World Cup."

According to the governing body, the extended agreements also cover FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 and 2025, FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023 and 2025, FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2023 and 2025, FIFA Futsal World Cup 2024, FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2024 and 2026, FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2024 and 2026, and FIFA Confederations Cup 2025.

“These agreements guarantee wide distribution for FIFA tournaments across the U.S. and Canada," Niclas Ericson, FIFA Director of TV, said in a statement. "Together, we will be able to further promote football in North America and build on the impressive interest shown by audiences in these major territories during the 2014 FIFA World Cup."
