Fox Bolsters Super Bowl Coverage, Ads With Live Stream On Fox Sports Go

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

January 17, 2017: In what it is said would help create "the best possible experience for fans," Fox said it’s telecast of Super Bowl LI on Feb. 5 would be bolstered by a live, non-authenticated stream of the NFL's Big Game on Fox Sports GO, the platform that streams all of Fox Sports’ live events and studio programming.

As part of the platform, Fox Sports said that for the first time, a live stream of the Super Bowl would include local advertisement integration.

For the Super Bowl broadcast, users "will not need to enter their pay TV credentials for viewing," per Fox Sports.

According to Fox Sports, "more than 170 Fox affiliates around the country have already committed to partnering with Fox Sports to program local digital ads." Participating affiliates will have access to the same ad inventory for both the linear and digital broadcasts of the game.

More than 110 million people expected to watch Super Bowl LI on Feb. 5 from NRG Stadium in Houston, with 30-second national broadcast ads going for upward of $5 million, according to industry analysts.

"As part of the buildup to this year’s Super Bowl, we’re committed to creating the best possible experience for fans by dramatically expanding the ways and places in which they can watch the game," Eric Shanks, president, COO and executive producer for Fox Sports, said in a statement.

"Our pioneering collaboration with our affiliates to allow streaming local ad insertions will make commercials even more relevant for viewers and help make this year’s game even more of a personal experience for every fan.”

Fox Sports said that people nationwide would be able to stream the Super Bowl at FOXSportsGo.com via iOS, Android, Windows and Amazon tablets; or through such connected as Apple TV, Roku, Android TV, Chromecast, Amazon Fire and XBOX One.

Fox said that earlier this month it became the first network to offer live streaming of its primetime entertainment programming on a national basis with the relaunch of Fox Now Live in all 210 national markets. Fox Now Live also features digital ad insertion by local affiliates nationwide.

According to Brian Jones, evp and COO for Nexstar Broadcasting Group, and chairman for the Fox Affiliates Board of Governors, "We’re excited that this year’s Super Bowl will showcase the unique relationship of Fox and its local affiliates which allows us to collaborate on innovations such as this.

"An incredible 170 affiliates from all around the U.S., including 22 stations that Nexstar owns or provides services to, opted to participate in this first-of-its-kind digital ad insertion for the Super Bowl, allowing us to promote our local affiliate brands and reach viewers on a national scale. We look forward to more groundbreaking collaborations with Fox in the future," said Jones.
